NASCAR Power Rankings Week 19

Tom Jensen, SPEED.com

WEEK#
Posted July 10, 2011 03:07 PM EDT

Kyle Busch was the big winner Saturday when the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series made its first visit to Kentucky Speedway.

The losers were the 20,000 fans who had tickets but no place to park, as traffic nightmares ruined what should have been a triumphant night but, instead, triggered a debacle some were calling “Carmaggedon.”

It was smoother sailing for Busch, who led 125 of 267 laps to win the Quaker State 400 and move atop the FOXSports.com/SPEED.com Power Rankings.

This week’s list:

Johnson

RK DRIVER WINS CHANGE HIGH/LOW COMMENTS
1

Kyle Busch

4 2 1/20
The younger of the Busch brothers administered an old-fashioned butt-kicking to his competitors to take over the points lead for the first time since finishing second at Phoenix in February.

2

Carl Edwards

1 - 1/11
A solid fifth-place finish for Edwards. He ran well but did not have the pace of Busch or several other top drivers.

3

Kurt Busch

1 2 2/14
Although he faded a little at the end of the race, Kurt was fast all night and continues to look like a championship contender.

4

Jimmie Johnson

1 3 1/15
The five-time champ made a last-lap miscue that allowed David Reutimann to pass him for second place. Otherwise, he ran well all race long.

5

Kevin Harvick

3 4 1/20
It was a hugely disappointing night for Richard Childress Racing, as Harvick’s 16th-place finish was the best of the four RCR Chevys.

6

Matt Kenseth

2 2 2/26
Like former teammate Kurt Busch, Kenseth looks like he’s ready to go the distance and take the title fight to Johnson.

7

Jeff Gordon

2 1 1/17
If you asked Gordon, he’d probably tell you he and his team made chicken salad by finishing 10th.

8

Ryan Newman

0 3 3/18
After consecutive finishes outside the top 20, Newman earned his first top five since Darlington with a great fourth-place run.

9

Denny Hamlin

1 - 7/20
Not a stellar weekend for Hamlin, who lost an engine in practice and finished a so-so 11th. His team has work to do.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear
10

Dale Earnhardt Jr.

0 2 2/12
A flat tire proved to be Earnhardt’s undoing, as he finished 30th. His average finish in the past four races? 27.75. Ouch.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear
11

Tony Stewart

0 1 1/13
Stewart fans are still waiting for him to go on one of his patented summer hot streaks. Finished 12th on Saturday.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear
12

Juan Pablo Montoya

0 2 5/25
Although he finished only 15th at Kentucky, he is in good Chase shape with the Brickyard and Watkins Glen still to come.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear
13

David Ragan

1 - 13/23
On the heels of his Daytona victory, Ragan finished eighth and moved up two more spots in the points standings to 15th.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear
14

Clint Bowyer

0 4 4/25
It was a train-wreck night from start to finish for Bowyer, who was unhappy his team missed the setup yet again.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear
15

Greg Biffle

0 - 7/26
A 21st-place finish was worst of all four Roush Fenway Racing Fords.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear
16

Kasey Kahne

0 2 3/24
After qualifying fourth, Kahne has to expect to finish higher than 13th.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear
17

Paul Menard

0 - 6/23
One of the fastest cars in practice, Menard had a disheartening 24th-place finish.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear
18

Mark Martin

0 1 8/22
It’s difficult to watch Martin, in his final year with Hendrick, struggle week after week after week.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear
19

Brad Keselowski

1 2 1/26
He should have finished higher than seventh, but Keselowski led more laps than anyone except race-winner Kyle Busch.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear
20

A J Allmendinger

0 4 7/20
How bad was Alllmendinger’s 28th-place run? After he got out of the car, the first thing he did was apologize to his fans and sponsors.
