Allmendinger penalized after incident
by DUSTIN LONG THE ROANOKE TIMES , The Roanoke Times
AJ Allmendinger, arrested early Thursday for driving while impaired, said he had to take a breathalyzer for NASCAR before he could practice Friday afternoon at Talladega Superspeedway. Allmendinger was stopped by Mooresville, N.C., police and cited for having a blood alcohol level of .08, the minimum to be arrested in North Carolina. NASCAR announced Thursday that it had placed Allmendinger on probation since he admitted guilt in a statement released by the team. Friday, Allmendinger's team, Richard Petty Motorsports, announced that it had placed him on probation through the 2010 racing season and fined him $10,000 with that money going to charity.
Asked about taking a breathalyzer before practicing, Allmendinger said: "I respect the punishment and everything I have to do to gain the trust back of NASCAR and everybody that is out there racing with me. "I feel very fortunate that I get the opportunity to still do what I love to do and come here and race cars. I just have to go along with whatever is kind of doled out to me.'' Still together Hendrick Motorsports announced that Lance McGrew will be Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s crew chief next season. McGrew has worked with Earnhardt on an interim basis since June after Tony Eury Jr. was replaced. McGrew vowed changes for the only Hendrick team not in the Chase. Earnhardt's team and Mark Martin's team are based in the same shop. McGrew said he and Martin's crew chief, Alan Gustafson, would restructure the shop. Personnel changes to Earnhardt's team also are possible. "I don't have all the answers just yet,'' McGrew said. "I think as far as personnel, that's something that we analyze, we grade our guys weekly. It's not seasonally. "Until you feel completely confident that you have the best car chief you can have, the best shock guy you can have, the best engineers that you can have, on down the line, you're constantly wanting to improve that because that's what makes it all tick.'' New look Kyle Busch said that "for some reason something just didn't click'' about working with crew chief Steve Addington. Dave Rogers replaces Addington as Busch's crew chief after this weekend. "When you're not beating [Jimmie Johnson], something's got to change,'' Busch said. "The rest of these people are all staying the same and, yet, they're not beating [Johnson]. You've got to look at yourself compared to them week in and week out.'' Asked if he wanted the change, Busch said: "I wouldn't say that I wanted it, but when I got told about it on Monday morning, I gave my opinion on the side of sometimes the grass is greener on the other side like it was when I came over here and sometimes it's not. We can only hope that Dave will be the right fit.'' Rogers comes from the Nationwide series and does not have experience with the new car. Busch admits that could be an issue early. "It's not going to be a win next weekend, I'm sure,'' Busch said. "That's why we're doing it now, trying to get a couple of races of experience for [Dave].'' Changes for trucks NASCAR announced a few rule changes for the Camping World Truck series for next year. The trucks will have the same style double-file restarts as used in Cup and Nationwide. Teams can add fuel and change tires on the same pit stop -- this year teams could only do one and then come back to pit to do the other. Six pit crew members will be allowed to pit the car, an increase from five this year. Also, a new self-venting fuel can will be introduced as an option for teams to use along with the conventional fuel can. A SPEC engine will be introduced as an option for teams at tracks less than 1.25 miles in length to help reduce costs for teams and, according to NASCAR , encourage participation from the regional series. Schedule changes Dover Motorsports Inc. announced that it is ceasing all operations at Memphis Motorsports Park and would not host any events next year. NASCAR announced the Memphis Truck race will move to Nashville Superspeedway on April 2 and be a part of a double-header Easter weekend event with the Nationwide series there. Memphis' Nationwide race moves to Gateway on Oct. 23.
