Jimmie Johnson didn't even look tired in the winner's circle after the 2004 Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway, and when your car runs like his did, you're not going to be tired.

He had the hot rod to win two years in a row. I won back-to-back 600-mile races at Charlotte in 1978 and '79 and 1988 and '89, but I never had a car as dominant as the 48. That car was awesome.

It was the most dominant performance by a race car I've seen in quite a while. It was as dominant as Formula One's Michael Schumacher was on Sunday morning in the European Grand Prix. The 48 team made all the right adjustments. They were on their game all night long.

He looked awful racy coming off of Turn 2 and headed down the back before making the move of the race with 25 laps to go. He won the race by threading the needle between Robby Gordon and Kasey Kahne . He couldn't wait. He had to go. Kahne gave him a little room, and he forced his way in there. That was just hard driving right there, and I couldn't believe how fast that car was.

Jeff Gordon told me the difference between young drivers today and five years ago is these young guys, like Johnson, drive every green-flag lap like they are qualifying. They don't ever slow down or pace themselves, and they've got equipment that will hold up so they can run as fast as they want every lap.

Junior Johnson and his son Robert were in the booth with Mike, Larry and me. Junior engineered just about all of the Charlotte wins I had, certainly the one we got in the inaugural Winston in 1985. With eight wins as a car owner and back-to-back fall wins as a driver in 1962 and 1963, Junior has only one fewer win than Rick Hendrick now has as an owner.

They named a highway in Junior's honor in Wilkes County, N.C. I told him that they should have named that highway after me as many times as he told me to hit it.

Charlotte is a Johnson kind of speedway. Jimmie dominated in 2004 on his way to sweeping both races there. Junior has won here. And Joe Lee Johnson won the first World 600 in 1960 so there's a little history lesson for you folks.
