Steele went on to win the 20-lap, rain-shortened sprint car event, with Drake bringing home the No. 20s Mopar in the runner-up spot. Their TSRE cohort Cory Kruseman crossed the finish line in 13th position.
Steele also captured the USAC National Midget Car Series portion of the event, driving his No. 2 Mopar from Nicholas Motorsports into the lead on the final lap to take the victory. Drake drove the No. 11 Mopar from Wilke-PAK Motorsports to a seventh-place finish. Josh Wise and the No. 20 Mopar team from Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises also finished in the top-10, earning a ninth place feature event finish.
Drake finished off the stellar event for Mopar with a win in the Weld Racing USAC Silver Crown Series feature event. The No. 11 Mopar team from Stewart-Snider Motorsports earned their first win in the 2004 season, leading the final 17 circuits of the 60-lap event. The win was a repeat performance for Drake, who won this event in 2003. J.J. Yeley earned a fifth place finish in the No. 111 Mopar entry in an off-weekend from his NASCAR duties.
Pikes Peak International Raceway honored the entire Mopar-sponsored team from Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises in a formal ceremony, announcing them as the new world speed record holders on Sunday evening. The team also participated in a downtown Fountain, Colo., appearance for fans on Friday evening that featured Steele, Wise, Drake and Kruseman, as well as the crew, transporter and show cars.
The USAC National Midget Car Series returns to action tomorrow at the Indianapolis Speedrome, with the USAC National Sprint Car Series competing at Toledo (Ohio) Speedway this Friday and at Indianapolis Raceway Park on Saturday. The Silver Crown competitors' next race is scheduled for July 23-24 at the Milwaukee (Wis.) Mile.
