B.W. from Eaton Rapids, Mich.: How did testing at Martinsville go? We are making the trip down from Michigan for the race, and we can't wait to see 'ol DW race one more time.
Darrell Waltrip: The Martinsville test was great. I was the fastest truck there according to our watch. We all had electronic timing and scoring, not NASCAR, but what we set up with the Pi System. I ran a 19.99-second lap, and I think Mike Skinner was next with a 20.10. We were very pleased the truck. We made long runs, including two 50-lap runs. The thing stayed really consistent and good. It was just a fun day, and one of the best days I've had at the race track in a long time.
My 11 truck was good. I drove David Reutimann's 17 truck and helped him some. I couldn't get into Robert Huffman's truck. He's a little narrower in the hips than I am so I couldn't get in his, but overall, I thought we had a great day. We made David's truck a lot better. I think he and Robert are going to be really pleased with their stuff when they go back home and fix it before they come back for the race.
It's so helpful to test where you're going to race. I just wish NASCAR would realize that making us go to other race tracks to test costs just as much money or more than if we tested at the track where we're going to race. It would be so helpful if we didn't have to look for places to test. We could test where we're going to race. You could run the track and test tires with other people. I just don't understand making teams go to Lakeland, Fla., Milwaukee, Kentucky, Greenville, S.C. and road courses. Teams go all over the country looking for places to test. Just have a one-day test at the track where the teams will race. It would be open to whomever wants to be there. It would save money because you would be doing something that's productive.
