Chassis No. 70
This car debuted in the 2003 Daytona 500 and was responsible for Stewart's first top-10 Daytona 500 finish - seventh. It didn't fare well in its next two races, as it was caught up in accident at Talladega in April to finish 35th. Its next race came at July in Daytona, where it finished an uncharacteristic 21st. It rebounded at Talladega in September with a strong third-place finish. The 2004 Budweiser Shootout marked its fifth career start, but it was the only action Chassis No. 70 saw in 2004. But after visiting the wind tunnel and testing at Daytona Jan. 11-13, Chassis No. 70 was chosen as the primary car for this year's Daytona 500. There, it won its Gatorade Duel qualifying race to secure the fourth starting spot for the Daytona 500. And in the 500, Chassis No. 70 led seven times for a race-high 107 laps before finishing seventh. It resumed its up-front ways at the spring Talladega race, where it finished second to race winner Jeff Gordon.

Notes of Interest

  • The Pepsi 400 will mark Stewart's 229th career NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series start, his 14th career point-paying start at Daytona and his 27th career point-paying start in a restrictor plate race.
  • Stewart gained two positions in the Nextel Cup point standings as a result of his win last Sunday at Sonoma. He is now fourth in the standings with 2,052 points, 198 markers behind new series leader Greg Biffle. At this point last year Stewart was sixth in the standings with 2,043 points, 332 points behind series leader Jimmie Johnson. Stewart has scored nine more points this year than he did last year heading into the 17th race of the season.
  • While Stewart has yet to win a point-paying restrictor plate race, he does have three Nextel Cup wins in non-point restrictor plate races. All have been at Daytona, with the most recent victory coming in this year's Gatorade Duel. His two other wins were back-to-back triumphs in the Budweiser Shootout (2001 and 2002).
  • Stewart has two other Daytona victories on his resume - this year's season-opening NASCAR Busch Series race and the 2002 IROC race.
  • Stewart will pull double duty at Daytona by competing in Thursday night's Brumos Porsche 250 Rolex Sports Car Series race for the Howard-Boss Motorsports team. It will be Stewart's second race behind the wheel of the Crawford DP03 chassis, with the first one being the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona Feb. 5-6. There, he and his Howard-Boss Motorsports co-drivers Jan Lammars and Andy Wallace were leading with less than two hours remaining when a broken gearbox dropped them off the lead lap. But the crew was able to make repairs so that the trio could rejoin the race, whereupon they finished third. In Thursday night's race, Stewart will again share driving duties with Wallace.
  • Home Depot store #1960, located in Downers Grove, Ill., will be represented on the lower rear quarterpanel of the #20 Home Depot Chevrolet during the Pepsi 400. Store #1960 was judged to be the outstanding store of the past week, thereby earning its place on the #20 Joe Gibbs Racing machine.
  • From 6-8 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, Stewart will be appearing at The Home Depot (store #266) on 6130 East Colonial in Orlando, Fla.
  • The Home Depot, in partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing and the national non-profit organization KaBOOM!, will have their second "Racing to Play" playground build on Wednesday at the Daytona Beach (Fla.) Housing Authority. The kickoff build for their philanthropic initiative came on June 16 at the Jackson (Mich.) Arts & Technology Academy. There, volunteers and Joe Gibbs Racing team members — including Stewart, crew chief Greg Zipadelli and team president J.D. Gibbs — built the first of 10 NASCAR-themed playgrounds for at-risk youth in NASCAR race communities. The "Racing to Play" program identifies and works with 10 organizations in select race markets to build NASCAR-themed KaBOOM! playgrounds in a single day at the organization's site. The program targets organizations that serve children, including those that support at-risk youth and provide positive after-school and learning environments. The next build is scheduled for July 7 at the Carol Murphy Center in Markham, Ill. Sites are still being determined for Indianapolis; Fontana, Calif.; Richmond, Va.; Talladega, Ala.; Kansas City, Kan.; Atlanta; and Phoenix.
  • Corporate Notes

  • The Home Depot has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Williams Brothers Lumber Company, a leading supplier of lumber and building materials to the home building industry in Atlanta. Headquartered in Suwanee, Ga., Williams Brothers Lumber Company will be a stand-alone business within The Home Depot Supply Division.
