Newman Q&A: Retaliation may be worth 25-point penalty
by FOX Sports Radio
Ryan Newman: I think part of that is the whole idea of consistency. What happened on Sunday isn't much different at all from what happened with myself and Dale Jarrett at Bristol on that Saturday night, and it's happened several times in the past to drivers. We've seen them sent out to my knowledge only Kevin Harvick (April 2002) out of a race for his actions. If they change their ideas, they better talk to the drivers and the crew chiefs and teams before they actually say, 'Hey, there's a real good shot of you not showing up next week if you're gonna act like this.' So, consistency-wise, they haven't been perfect, but if they use this as a precedent as they have in the past then everything is OK.
My biggest worry and you guys haven't talked about this yet to my knowledge is if somebody spins me out and I go back and spin them out, I take the 25-point hit, but I may do so knowing that (and) I can put them out a 120 points (by spinning them out). And that may be a bigger benefit to me then me losing 25 so I think there's a refined policy that needs to be put in place as far as the whole retaliation thing.
Before that, we heard some tales from David Stein's Monday Night Football diary in which David was disappointed at the fairly uneventful coin toss and national anthem prior to the Saints-Giants kickoff. Plus Eagles linebacker Dhani Jones spent an hour with The Extravaganza and told us about his experience answering phones at the Hurricane Katrina Relief telethon taking place throughout Monday night's broadcast. And David Stein came up with his Top 7 Dhani Jones movies including "Dhani Jones and the Temple [Owls] of Doom" and "Dhandi!"
Tomorrow be sure to catch our conversation with Jets' Head Coach Herm Edwards and Astros' Manager Phil Garner.
