NASCAR on FOX news and notes
NASCAR on FOX lead director Artie Kempner on the new "FOX 3D" production element being introduced in Daytona and throughout the 2007 NASCAR on FOX season: "We've been working on this project with Sportvision for about four years. FOX 3D is a computer generated animation system that computes data collected from the 'black boxes' placed inside of each car. The key is to be able to augment our own replays of various incidents with virtual replays created by this animated data. It presents a recreation of an incident, created from real data, and can be presented from a number of different vantage points to illustrate whether a car gets loose or if there was contact prior to a wreck. It's not exact, but we're able to get a good handle on where a wreck started, what happened, whether a guy's foot came of the accelerator, those types of things. Plus, the animated video game look it features is very significant for younger viewers who are used to playing NASCAR 2007, or similar games. I think it's going to be a great teaching tool for our viewers." NASCAR on FOX race announcer Mike Joy on former Formula One driver Juan Montoya's entrance into NASCAR Nextel Cup racing this year: "I don't think his nationality is an issue at all. I think the stigma that he is a "pointy-car" guy. He comes from Indy Car and Formula One. So, if there is a stigma, it is because he didn't start on some quarter mile oval in the Midwest or in the Southeast and work his way up, driving bigger and faster stock cars on bigger and faster tracks. Do I think that's a negative? Absolutely not. I think it adds more interest and more people who are interested in him." NASCAR on FOX analyst Darrell Waltrip on Toyota's entrance into NASCAR Nextel Cup Racing: "It's a big deal right now, but I think eventually a Camry will be just another race car. Once the teams are established it'll be more about the drivers and the teams and a lot less about where Toyotas are made. I think when we talk about diversity, we need to talk not only about drivers, but cars too. We're going to have to open up our eyes and open up our arms and we're going to have to welcome whoever NASCAR feels is qualified to come and race with us." FOX Sports Chairman David Hill on efforts to improve NASCAR's television ratings: "I'm particularly concerned about the way NASCAR schedules the events. It's a huge stumbling block that we're dark the third week of the season. We've got this huge momentum going from Daytona, then Fontana, and then there's a Busch race from Mexico and no Nextel Cup racing. I was told a few years ago that this had something to do with the moon. I think it was a leap year, and I said, 'OK?' I accepted that answer, but since then nothing has changed. NASCAR has got to look at how they schedule the races." NASCAR on FOX analyst Darrell Waltrip on the controversy surrounding his brother Michael's engine: "I asked him what the story is. And I'll say this, when he said he didn't know anything about his engine, he wasn't lying. He knows didilly-squat about engines." FOX Sports Chairman David Hill on a perceived competition with ESPN: "To be honest I'm absolutely thrilled that ESPN is involved with NASCAR. The amount of commitment that they contributing is absolutely terrific. And what I'm more excited about is the way that ESPN is presenting NASCAR on SportsCenter, like it's a real sport. Because it is a real sport. So the more exposure that this sport gets across the board, the better it is for everyone involved. I've always taken the belief that a rising tide lifts all ships. That being said, I think at the end of the year, our package will be No. 1. And I say that with all modesty." NASCAR on FOX analyst Darrell Waltrip on the recently released film Dale: "I have a copy of it, I've tried to watch it a couple of times. What I've seen is very touching. I like what I've seen. I'm going to get some of my friends together and we're going to sit here and watch it together. We'll probably cry together. It's funny how six years later, it still seems so surreal to me. Dale and I were good friends. We weren't great friends, we were just good friends. But watching stuff about him, I know how it affects me. I just can't imagine how it affects his family and people that were really super close to him." |
