Matt Kenseth

Making peace with McMurray

Jennifer from Spokane, Wash.: What is your relationship with your new teammate Jamie McMurray? I know that you and he have had some run-ins in the past. Also, I know you were good friends with Kurt Busch. Was there any falling out because of his departure?

Matt Kenseth: With Jamie, what happened there is well behind us. In racing, you're going to get into it with just about everyone on the track at some point or the other. Jamie's been a great help so far. Our garage stalls were pretty much side by side during Speedweeks at Daytona, and we did a lot of talking, not just about racing and things on the track, but about other stuff as well. That gave us a good chance to talk a lot and get to know one another a little better. As far as Kurt's concerned, we still talk and really, relationships don't die out just because someone changes teams. We see each other about the same because usually the only time drivers see each other, teammate or not, is at the track on the weekend.

Flying to stay in shape

Mary from Berlin, Wisc.: What sort of exercise regimen do you do to get/stay in shape?

Matt Kenseth: Man, I didn't know these questions were going to be so hard. Well, the main thing is I just stay active and try to eat right, and Katie helps me do that. In what free time I do have, I'll go riding motorcycles or snowmobiles or fly airplanes. This past off-season, I spent a lot of time learning to fly and getting my pilot's license. Now, I'm working on my instrument license which is like the next step up. I might work out occasionally, but nothing regular or too strenuous.

Owning not in Matt's future

Gene from Wake Forest, N.C.: Will you ever consider competing in the Craftsman Truck or Busch Series as an owner like Kevin Harvick?

Matt Kenseth: Not as an owner. I don't want to have to deal with all of the stuff that goes with being an owner. I would rather drive. Now, that being said, I would never rule out competing in the Truck Series as a driver, but right now, I'm happy with running the DEWALT car in Cup. As far as the Busch Series goes, we've run that since about '96, and we're racing 22 races in the Busch Series this season. But, no... as of now, I have no desire to be an owner in any capacity.

Jamie McMurray

Fusion vs. Charger

Mike from Palm Beach, Fla.: Jamie, how would rate the performance and handling of the Fusion against the Charger so far?

Jamie McMurray: So far, the Fusion has been great. I know that our speeds and our handling have been strong in the test sessions we've been to, and our cars have also been good since we've been in Daytona. I think my teammates feel the same way. We are all pleased with the performance of the Fusion so far.

Chemistry lesson

Shane from Roy, Utah: Jamie, how do you like the chemistry at Roush Racing? Also what do you think the biggest benefit of being part of the organization will be?

Jamie McMurray: The chemistry has really come along since I've gotten to Roush. Obviously, I'm learning to work with my new crew chief, Jimmy Fennig, and we're communicating really well. Also, I have gotten to know my team, and they're really a hard-working, great group of guys. I think the biggest advantage to being at Roush is just the winning tradition and expected level of success. They know how to win, and they expect every weekend to be able to do it.

Lucky number?

Brady from Greenbelt, Md.: Hey Jamie, wondering if changing the car from No. 97 to No. 26 was your request or the team's idea and why?

Jamie McMurray: Changing the number wasn't my idea; it really didn't matter to me. But I think it's a good idea and will allow me to establish my own identity at Roush.

Legend for a teammate

Ken from Hawthorne, Nev.: How does it feel to be a teammate of one of NASCAR's best, Mark Martin? What do you feel you can offer him, and what do you feel he can offer you?

Jamie McMurray: I feel fortunate to have Mark Martin as a teammate. He's a legend in our spor, and he's been around a long time and seen a lot of things. I feel as though I can go to him with questions, but I also feel like I can learn a lot from just watching how he handles himself both on and off the race track.
