Home Depot Store Appearance by Tony Stewart in Conyers, Ga., on Thurs., March 16

  • From 6-8 p.m. EST on Thurs., March 16, Stewart will be appearing at The Home Depot (store #128) on 1330 Dogwood Drive in Conyers, Ga. Stewart's Joe Gibbs Racing teammate - J.J. Yeley, driver of the #18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet in the Nextel Cup Series and the #18 Vigoro/Home Depot Chevrolet in the NASCAR Busch Series - will also be available to sign autographs.
  • Car History -- Chassis No. 100

This was a brand new race car at last year's spring Atlanta race, and as the 100th chassis built by JGR, it marked a small milestone in the company's 15-year history. Prior to the Atlanta race, Chassis No. 100 saw track time via pre-season tests at Las Vegas (Jan. 31-Feb.1) and California (Feb. 2-3). Its second career start came at the spring Dover race, where a late race pit road speeding penalty thwarted a potential top-10 effort. It made a surprise appearance at Chicagoland to notch its third career start, where it took the track after the team's primary car - Chassis No. 97 - was crashed in practice. It qualified 13th at the hands of JGR's NASCAR Busch Series driver J.J. Yeley, but because someone other than Stewart qualified the car, Stewart was forced to start the race at the back of the field. Nonetheless, Stewart took Chassis No. 100 from 43rd to finish fifth in the 267-lap race. It made its fourth career start at the fall Pocono race, where it enjoyed a solid weekend, qualifying sixth and finishing seventh.

    Notes of interest

  • The Golden Corral 500 will mark Stewart's 252nd career NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series start and his 15th career Nextel Cup start at Atlanta.
  • Stewart is currently 19th in the Nextel Cup point standings with 304 points, 236 markers behind series leader Jimmie Johnson as a result of his 21st place finish last Sunday at Las Vegas, where a cut right rear tire nine laps short of the finish thwarted a sure top-five. At this point last year Stewart was sixth in the standings with 402 points, 123 markers behind series leader Johnson. Stewart has scored 98 fewer points this year than he did last year heading into the fourth race of the season.
  • Stewart is third in miles led this season as he has paced the field for 187 miles. Matt Kenseth is first in miles led with 369 and his Roush Racing teammate Greg Biffle is second with 347 miles led. Trailing Stewart is another Roush driver - Mark Martin with 135 miles led. Dale Earnhardt Jr. stands fifth with 82 miles led.
  • Stewart has the third best driver's rating three races into the season. His 107.1 rating is 10.7 points lower than that of Jimmie Johnson, whose 117.8 rating ranks best amongst Nextel Cup drivers.
  • Stewart is the fastest driver early in a run in the three races held this season. His season rank of 2.5 is, by far, the best amongst Nextel Cup drivers during the first 25 percent of laps in a pit window under green flag conditions. Greg Biffle is next best with a 5.5 rating.
  • Stewart's win in the 2002 spring Atlanta race was his first win in a 500-mile Nextel Cup race. It was also his 13th career Nextel Cup victory. Stewart now has three wins in 500-mile races - spring Atlanta in 2002, spring Pocono in 2003 and fall Charlotte in 2003.
  • Prior to that Atlanta win, Stewart's best finish at the 1.54-mile oval was ninth in the 2001 NAPA 500, for what was then his only top-10 finish at Atlanta. Since winning at Atlanta, Stewart has finished within the top-10 all but once, as he finished 17th in last year's spring race.
  • Model of improvement - Stewart's average finish in his last nine Atlanta races (2001-2005) is seventh. His average finish in his first five Atlanta races was 22nd.
  • In his past nine Atlanta races Stewart has led 469 of a possible 2,848 laps (16.5 percent).
  • Stewart earned his 17th career win in October of 2003 at Charlotte, the sister track to Atlanta Motor Speedway. He now has 24 wins to his resume, with the last one coming 18 races ago at Watkins Glen. In the 17 races since, Stewart has led 757 laps.
  • Home Depot store #8523, located in El Paso, Texas, will be represented on the lower rear quarterpanel of the #20 Home Depot Chevrolet during the Golden Corral 500. Store #8523 was judged to be the outstanding store of the past week, thereby earning its place on the #20 Joe Gibbs Racing machine.
  • Atlanta is home to Stewart's Nextel Cup sponsor - The Home Depot.
  • The Atlanta area has been very good to Joe Gibbs Racing. The team has earned a total of seven Nextel Cup wins, two Nextel Cup poles and one Busch Series pole at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Ga., while also garnering two NHRA Top Fuel victories and one NHRA Funny Car win at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga.
