Biffle's girlfriend was concerned, not 'catfighting'
|
When Lunders climbed off of the pit box, she walked right toward me, grabbed my wrist and looked me in the eye.
"I'm mad because he could have hurt Greg," she said.
She wasn't upset that her boyfriend crashed out of the race. She was concerned about his health and his safety. She's taken a lot of kidding and criticism, and it's really a big deal about nothing. The incident has been unfairly characterized by some as "cat fighting." Significant others have shown their passion on pit road for years, and she didn't do anything to embarrass Biffle or the sport. I would be proud if my wife stood up for me like she did.
On the flight to Las Vegas last month, I was seated next to Lunders, and she's a delightful person. She's been dating Biffle for eight years, and when they met, she was a student at Washington State University. Somebody told her that he drove trucks, but she thought he drove a monster truck.

"That's the story she tells," Biffle said. "I don't know (if it's true.) Obviously she knew when we met that I raced in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series so maybe originally when she was told she wasn't aware of what I did."

She's a classy young lady, and I have a lot of respect for her. She doesn't need me to defend her, but I'm impressed with her as a person. I'm not going to say we're best friends, but we did sit together on the plane for five hours. I see her just about every week and wave.
After coming down from the pit box, I think she just wanted to tell me how she felt. She was upset because she was afraid her boyfriend was hurt. That's where the story begins and ends.
