Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain (Sundays, 9 p.m. ET on SPEED) welcomed Darrell Waltrip on Sunday June 17 to talk about Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s move to Hendrick Motorsports. Check out the video of Part 1 of the interview, and below is a transcript of the Part 2.

Mark from Pittsburgh, Pa.: Aw, c'mon. Hendrick kicked (Kyle Busch) to the curb just to make more money with Dale Jr., and that's it. And if Junior can win championships, he'd win them driving a cement truck if he was that good.

NASCAR TV schedule and more

Dave Despain: OK, Darrell, you're reaction to that. Kyle got kicked to the curb.

Darrell Waltrip: In this sport, people that know Rick know that he's a very patient man, and he likes projects. I think Kyle may have been a project. It may have been a little bit too big a project for Rick. You've got an 'A' student over here in Dale Jr., and you've got a kid over here that stays in "timeout" all the time. Rick worked hard with Kyle, and if he tells you the truth, I know that to be a fact. He sat him down time and time again and had a father-son talk with him. But, apparently, it just wasn't getting through. If you go back and look at the all-star race, and you look at Rick Hendrick talking to (No. 5 crew chief Alan) Gustafson on our show when Kyle wrecked Kurt, I could see it right then and there that Rick said, "I've had enough of this." An opportunity came along to do something about it, and he took it.

Dave Despain: I think if Kyle's smart, he'll take this slap upside the ego and learn from it, make it a step in his process of growing up. Keep the hard-charging style, Kyle. Just lose some of that attitude. You'll be a lot more valuable in the long run.

Blair in Cranford, N.J.: Two parts: Do you think that Dale Sr. would have a problem with this, and do you think that Teresa (Earnhardt) will give a hard time with Rick Hendrick, giving up the No. 8? Maybe a swap for the No. 5?

Darrell Waltrip: I know what Sr. would say, "Show me the money." Sr. wasn't out on the open market because he and Childress had that special relationship. But I guarantee you — and Rick knows this from the napkin contract — there was a bunch of folks back when Dale Jr. started racing that tried to get Dale Jr. to come and drive for them because they knew Dale Sr. wasn't going to pay near what somebody else might be willing to pay him. I think there was a little bit of a rub with his DEI contract. I don't think Jr. ever got the respect he wanted; I don't think he ever got the kind of pay he deserved. When Rick Hendrick and Jr. sat down, I'm sure if Sr. was over here in a corner, he was saying, "Make him pay you, boy. Make him pay you." And I'm sure that that was probably a consideration.

Dave Despain: The second part of the question was do you think Teresa will give them the 8. Do you think that will be his number next year?

Darrell Waltrip: I think that's not very likely. I probably wouldn't. If I was her, I probably wouldn't. If you made it lucrative enough for me, and he made it maybe something that we could talk about, and there was something in it for me, maybe. But I really think he's probably going to be stuck with 08 if he wants to keep 8, and that's not bad. I don't see a problem with that.

Dave Despain: (There's) a great picture on the Internet. Somebody has already designed the paint job for the car. How quickly these things happen (with) the magic of the computer. There is your No. 5 Dale Jr. Budweiser car, all laid out for next year. Photoshop indeed.

Darrell Waltrip: That can't be true because I don't think it's going to be Budweiser.

Dave Despain: That was one of my questions. You don't think it will be Budweiser. Do you know who it will be? We've heard a shoe deal. We've heard a credit card deal from one of your buddies. What's it going to be?

Darrell Waltrip: Yeah, wrong. It'll probably still be something you could drink. That would my guess.

Dave Despain: "Something you could drink," he said, hinting.

Darrell Waltrip: And it won't be in a red can.

Dave Despain: He's narrowing it down.

Aletha from Louisville, Ky.: My point is I got to watch the 11 a.m. press conference (last Wednesday), and what I saw in the press conference was moving. And I'm a Junior Nation fan, not so much Earnhardt Sr. I like the point that (Waltrip) made about that. My point was when he said that Rick Hendrick cared about him being happy, and anybody that's an Earnhardt Jr. fan, you would want to see him happy. I'm glad to see him relieved. I'm glad to see him smile. Even after the Michigan race, he was very content, something I haven't seen. That's, to me, more wonderful than anything else. I love him at DEI, but him being happy means a lot. The relationship, I feel, he'll have with Rick Hendrick will be one of healing like has been demonstrated, and he needs it. I think both parties do, and the bottom line is (Hendrick) cares about (Dale Jr.), and Rick Hendrick didn't care who (Dale Jr.) drove for. And that's the bottom line for me.

Dave Despain: Thanks Aletha. Darrell, I've got 10 seconds left after that. How do you think the fan thing is going to shake out over the long haul? Are they going to accept this or not?

Darrell Waltrip: For the rest of this year, it'll be ebbs and flow, ebb and tide. People will be on it; they'll be off it. When they'll really love it is when Junior gets in one of those Hendrick cars at Daytona and checks out on the field. They'll say, "Man, he made a great decision."

Dave Despain: You won't narrow this down for me, will you? A drink not in a red can.

Darrell Waltrip: Aww, no, but you can think about it. Maybe I'll get back with you next week.

Dave Despain: Why not Budweiser? Why won't that happen?

Darrell Waltrip: There's a year left on their contract with DEI. I think I'm correct about that so maybe there's a possibility they could move if they wanted to. I don't know all of the ins and outs of that contract, but I just don't feel like that's going to happen. I feel like he wants to start with his own deal, clean sheet of paper. That was yesterday; we're moving on to tomorrow.

Dave Despain: And with that, we'll move on. He's been right about this from the get-go, ladies and gentlemen. You might want to take this to the bank.

jr needs to go to Childress and get the #3 and tell TEI to shove it

Bud and the no.8 need to stay with DEI and maybe, just maybe, Truex Jr. will be the man to fill the void.

qbmeeks. I was thinking the same thing since the anouncement. Monster is distributed by Anheiser-Busch, so it is a possibility. Anheiser-Busch would be smart if they did sponsor Jr. with another one of their products, and this would be a great one. Energy drinks are the new beverage choice for this generation, and right now Red Bull dominates that industry, and Anheiser-Busch knows that if they get Jr. to promote Monster, it will blow up and close that gap with Red Bull. My thinking is at least for a year until their contract with DEI is up, and then maybe back to Budweiser. Anheiser-Busch also has a contract with not only DEI, but also with Jr. personaly through 2008 to represent them, so if he is contractually obligated to them fo another year, why not one of thier products. And yes, JR. Motorsports did sign McGrath to a developmental contract, so that tie is their. Just look at Kenny Bernstein in the NHRA, he was a long time Budweiser sponsored race team, and when he decided to com out of retirement this year, Anheiser-Busch stepped up and sponsored him with Monster. We are probably all wrong, and he is going to be sponsored by some corporation that none of us are thinking of. regardles of who it is, i bet hesde corporations are already in a bidding war with Hendrick for Jr's services. I personally think it will be good for the sport. It may have a trickle down effect, and cause all of the sponsors to step it up and get some better funding for the other teams, and thia may allow some of the other teams that are funded as well compete. Regardless of what everyone is saying DEI will not die. they have plenty of people there that still know how to race, and how to run a race team. All Jr. leaving did was wake them up, and maybe the ole' bag will turn loose of some of Dale Sr's money and get hem back on track. Look on th bright side of things. At least our favorite drivers aren't in the news each and every day for DWI's, attampted murder, dog fighting etc. like the NFL and NBA. And I don't think any of them are on performance enhancing drugs to make them out perform each other.

I thought this one up on my own, but I think Jr & Monster Energy would be a great mix... it is a drink everyone can enjoy, black & Green would be pretty spiffy ... doubt it will happen, but i was thinking about Jr motorsports signing a deal with Jeremy Mcgrath & Monster so there is a bit of a connection, but only time will tell

Jr is going to be a top 5 driver week in and week out he doesn't need Bud or #8 all that is, is a number. He is trying to stick it to TEI because she is an ankle and for those of you that don't know what an ankle is its three feet lower than a c--t. The Gatorade 5 makes since. I heard a rumor that Hendrick is trying to trade the 5 and Kellogs for the 8 and Bud. TEI wants 100 million for the 8 which will never happen. Just get in the 5 and drive Dale.

Hoosier,
Pabst Blue Ribbon sales would skyrocket!!! But millions would disagree with your choice of Miller Lite. Bud sells more than any other. I personally put all the weak post-prohibtion beers in the same category (Bud, Miller, Coors, etc). America used to make real beer with barley, not rice. Prohibition changed all that. Brewers wanted to attract more female customers, and so began brewing weaker flavored beer. Presto!!!!....Bud, Coors, Miller, Old Mil, etc.
I prefer a good locally brewed porter or brown ale myself. You get a loaf of bread and a pork chop in every bottle!!!! LOL!!!

I see how the folks on NASCAR are calling Hendrick Motorsports the "New York Yankees of NASCAR". Maybe they should make some arrangements with The Boss and make it happen. Maybe?

It would be cool if Bud stayed with Jr., and not DEI, (maybe change to Bud Light, as most of us beer drinkers do as we get older!)but as far as the 8 goes, I think it has sentimental meaning to him because wasn't it his grandfather's number? But if he doesn't get it, he will make any number he gets famous! I am kinda glad he won't be the 3, that was Dale Sr's number and legacy-I also think that as Jr's fans who are not happy about where he's going learn more about the relationship Dale Jr. and Rick Hendrick have, they will understand that this was definately the right decision, and if they don't, then they could always switch to Kyle Busch!

mihlur,
I totally agree with the vintage 8 idea! Wouldn't it be nice if the "powers that be" in NASCAR had the same approach to these things like we do? Wow!!!! I think I just had a John Lennon moment!! LOL!!!
I'll have to check out that movie also. Thanks!

DEJrTrue,

Interesting perspective. Sounds like you given it some logical thought, too.

Logic tells me the #8 should stay at DEI, but it'd be REALLY HARD to see another driver using it.

If Junior does keep the #8, I think he should make it look like Ralph's use to look. (Like on the vintage Bud car Jr drove at Michigan last year. That was his coolest paint scheme yet.)

By the way, for all of you that haven't seen the movie "Dale," you either need to go see it or buy it on DVD. I just got back from watching it. Awesome.

As much as I agree that the #8 should stay with DEI, I think it should go with JR, and if he does take over DEI someday then it can go back with him, he made that #8 what it is today, and he made Bud what they are today!!

ALYMAJALYMAJ

mihlur,
Although I don't exactly agree with everything you just said, I'll have to say that you've given the most logical reason to keep the 8 with DEI. I'd like to see it passed down from Grandad, to dad to son, etc. as drivers. Think of it as that old hunting rifle your Grampa had and gave to your dad. If your brother doesn't hunt much, but you live for it, wouldn't it make sense to give the rifle to you rather than just "keep it in the family"?

DEJrTrueDEJrTrue
(Report inappropriate content)

You're right, the #8 was Ralph Earnhardt's number. That's exactly why i think it should stay at DEI.

One day Junior will probably take over the company, and he'll be glad the family number is still a part of the family business.

Plus, it wouldn't be right for Hendrick to give up the #5; it was his first number.

As a diehard Junior fan, i think he should take over the #5.

mihlurmihlur
(Report inappropriate content)

I think NASCAR should let Jr have the number 8 if they own the numbers and if its up to Terresa, she needs to just give up the 8 and let it go! That was jrs grandfathers number and should stick in the family and I dont mean Her! And has for Budweiser It would be a smart marketing move if they sticked with jr! Which i heard that budweier woulndt go anywhere without Jr so lets hope for the best!
