Joe Gibbs Racing's switch to Toyota is an absolutely brilliant move on the manufacturer's part.

Toyota was attracted to the Gibbs team because JGR has its own engine program. When you look at manufacturer dollars these days, General Motors/Chevrolet, Ford and Dodge only have so much of a budget to spend on racing. GM is pretty heavily invested in Hendrick Motorsports and Richard Childress Racing. The Childress/Dale Earnhardt Inc. engine company probably takes a lot of Chevy's resources and support. So it's a logical step for Gibbs and a logical choice for Toyota.

NASCAR TV schedule and more

JGR has a great engine program. They make great power, and they've been involved in a lot of research and development on the R07 engines so they have a lot of knowledge. They have great in-house people and every imaginable CNC machine that's known to man. They have all the resources, which will be valuable to Toyota.

With the Car of Tomorrow being run full-time next year, the cars will be the same so you've got to look somewhere else for an advantage. Toyota has an incredible engine, and they're putting it in the hands of experienced engine builders like Mark Cronquist. Then, they're putting that engine in a car set up by the crew chiefs and the drivers that Gibbs will have next year — Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin. Gibbs has an incredible engineering department with all the latest and greatest. They had seven-post shaker machines when nobody else probably even thought about using them. They've got Doctor Who, Ronny Crooks, who is a great magician with shocks.

Combining all of those resources and knowledge, Toyota knocked one out of the ballpark by aligning with Gibbs, and it's going to help all of the manufacturer's teams. It'll help my brother Michael. It'll help Red Bull Racing. It'll help Bill Davis Racing. It's a great addition to the Toyota family, and the family members will reap incredible benefits. Plus, it won't take all year long to be strong. They will come out of the box at Daytona with a great package.

Toyota couldn't have become affiliated with a better organization and a better leader than J.D. Gibbs. He's a smart guy, and we've come to be very good friends. He's with me on the Motor Racing Outreach board of directors, and he's a good Christian guy, just like his father is. J.D. will do a great job of leading the company.

Merger mania

It appears to me that merger mania has hit NASCAR. Hall of Fame Racing will go with Gibbs to Toyota because they're so aligned with JGR, which provided all of the support to Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach. With the addition of J.J. Yeley over there and with the power of Toyota, H.O.F. will be another good combination for next year.

We haven't heard the last of mergers. I never would have thought it, and I'm not sure why Troy and Roger elected to do what they did. It looks like a lot of guys are selling out in this NASCAR merger mania, and a lot of mergers will be announced in the very near future.

Out of respect to the Chase, organizations are waiting for the hype and excitement of who is in and who is out of the Chase to be determined. Then, some other business decisions will be made public, just like Dale Jr.'s sponsor and his number. (Oh, by the way, I wouldn't mind seeing him have No. 11 on his car. That would make me pretty happy, but then that wouldn't make Denny Hamlin very happy.)

Over the next few weeks, we'll hear about a lot of business happenings in NASCAR that will continue to change the face of the sport.

Juniors belong together

Speaking of strong packages, Dale Earnhardt Jr. will come out of the box fast next year with Hendrick Motorsports. This week, a lot of people have said, "I wish they hadn't hired Tony Eury Jr. I wish Dale Jr. had gotten a clean start and severed all ties with his No. 8 team at DEI." I disagree. Bringing in Tony Jr. is a great move. Dale Jr. is comfortable with Tony Jr. Man, I'd hate for those two guys not to be together because we would miss out on some hilarious radio conversations.

My brother worked with Tony Jr. My brother is hard to please, and he's pretty knowledgeable. He said Tony Jr. is the best crew chief he's ever worked with, and that's the general consensus in the garage. Tony Jr. and Dale Jr. will be better than ever with Hendrick's unlimited resources. They're going to have all of the technology that HMS' great engineering staff has to offer.

They're going to have more people to help them, not only set up and build the cars, but Tony Jr. will have somebody like Darian Grubb sitting right beside him, helping make strategic calls during the race to run the race from the pit box. They'll rely on all kinds of people back at the shop.

A couple of guys have told me that once they left where they were and walked into the Hendrick Motorsports organization, they realized why they couldn't beat HMS. From engines to cars to crews to sponsors, the Hendrick organization lacks for nothing, and the results show it.

It is easy to see why NASCAR is on the decline. Chevy, Ford, Dodge, Toyota, they are all the same cars. People used to support US made cars. This is no longer true. We have no US made cars. We got just exactly what we asked for and it is all about money. DW used to tell it like it was but all he does now is kiss NASCARS rear end.

You guys raggin on Toyota are missng the point. Sure Toyota is a foreign owned manufacturer. BUT, they happen to be the only manufacturer in NASCAR that builds their car (CAMRY) right here in the good ole USA. That's right, they are the only one of the manufacturers providing jobs for Americans. The rest of the "big three" choose to pay Mexicans and Canadians to build there cars.<br />So screw you GM, Ford and Dodge. If you can't pay American's to build your cars, **** YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

I can understand why you are so happy that JGR went with Toyota. What I don't understand is why you try to tell us that Toyota is American made and we should quit picking on them. I would ask you one question. Where do the Toyota profits go? Tokyo would be the answer. The same Tokyo that produced those sub human "soldiers" that reveled in torturing our soldiers with unspeakable atrocities. I will not buy into the new global view of how wonderful the Japanese are. Given the chance, they would kill us in a second and dominate the world if they could. People in this country have very short memories. Here's hoping the rice burners never win a race.

What is, or isn't, an American car? None of the cars you see on the track are built in Detroit, or Japan for that matter. They're built in North Carolina. Even the motors are put together from parts supplied by one or another manufacturer. Basically it's a 5.7 liter V8 of American design manufactured to NASCAR specifications. Can the Japanese build our engine better than we can? I guess we're going to find out.

Listen up, in 1999 the average UAW hourly assembly line worker had a wage of $54 an hour. Less than half of them have more than a high school diploma. That works out to a little over $112,000 dollars a year. The average college grad makes less than $40,000 in his first year and the average teacher's salary is about $50,000 a year. Do you understand why US automakers are going overseas? I work in the automotive field, and as much as I love my Chevy pickup truck I have no lost love for the UAW members that have lived off a fatted cow for way too long. No, Toyota isn't an American company, but they aren't the downfall of the American automakers. Let them all race. NASCAR stands for the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing, and they haven't raced a stock car in 40 years. Take it for the entertainment that it is and pull for your favorite driver.

my fellow pathetic americans...i personally believe that maaooosssst us americans are so pathetically stupid and greedy, such as white collar us americans, that they really think a toyota is a us american car..i also personally believe that people in south africa and the iraq know that toyotas are japanese cars, and such as, i personally believe that if us americans keep their manufacturing plants in the us america, and us americans actually support their workers instead blasting them such as lazy union scumbags, that could only be good for the children...thank you, miss south carolina...

mcevoy.....you dolt! check your information before you put your foot in your mouth. Toyota's quality has been going down hill for the past couple of years, whereas GM quality has been on the rise during the same time! But of course you never hear about that. It is people like that have made the US's slogan "MADE IN CHINA"! As for Gibbs....May he end up like the sell out Waltrips!...CRASH AND DNQ

pathetic pathetic americans..how pathetic are we...i cant wait until bin laden produces the al-quaida cave rover in georgetowm, ky. so all of my fellow pathetic americans can say it is an american car and it is ok if tony stewart drives it...the japs are laughing all the way to the bank with our american dollars and we sit back and blast our union workers for the SUPPOSED inferior product they produce...pathetic greedy americans...somewhere out there (and not in canada or mexico), there is a hardworking gm union assembly line worker building a chevy and looking at tony stewart and his sellout brehthren as the greedy turncoats that they are...ford, chevy, and dodge have been extremely loyal to nascar from day one, however, today we have nothing but greedy owners and drivers who race for the love money...hopefully nascar nextel will go in the direction of the truck series, a series which is no doubt dominated by toyota, and the stands look like ghost towns..us rednecks like our chevys, fords, and dodges, and we boycott anything toyota...enough said...

I agree with Stewart71460. I am more disappointed with signing Busch than moving to Toyota. Since Toyota has a manufacturing plant in Georgetown Ky, and Georgetown Ky is in the U.S. they should be allowed to participate in NASCAR.
