HoF Racing replaces No. 96 crew chief Thomas
Steve Boyer will move into the crew chief's role effective immediately.
"Steve has earned the respect and trust of J.J. and the team in his short tenure here. Jeff (Moorad) and I are looking forward to having him in a more significant leadership role," said Tom Garfinkel, co-owner of Hall of Fame Racing in a team release. "He has a tremendous amount of experience that will be valuable to J.J., Hall of Fame Racing and the No. 96 DLP HDTV Toyota."
Thomas, who worked at Joe Gibbs Racing for nearly four years before joining the No. 96 DLP HDTV team, replaced competition director Philippe Lopez on the box in October 2006 to enable Lopez to concentrate on the shop. Thomas' familiarity with JGR's systems eased the transition between the two organizations. HoFR currently receives engines and chassis from JGR.
In the first five races of 2008, driver J.J. Yeley matched a season high 25th-place finish at Bristol Motor Speedway to move up to 31st in the point standings.
Boyer, 36, joined HoFR this year after heading up research and development department at Ganassi Racing. Boyer, who has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nebraska and earned a Masters Degree in Science and Engineering from Case Western Reserve University, had previously been crew chief for Sterling Marlin on the No. 40 Dodge.
"I'm excited for the opportunity to work with J.J. and the No. 96 DLP HDTV Toyota," Boyer said. "We've got a great group of people at Hall of Fame Racing and we plan on making the DLP car a contender every week."
