Caterpillar to take over for AT&T at RCR

With AT&T's NASCAR Sprint Cup sponsorship coming to an end, Richard Childress Racing has found a replacement sponsor for Jeff Burton.

As FOXSports.com first reported, Caterpillar has agreed to become the primary sponsor of the No. 31 Chevrolet driven by Burton beginning next season. The deal, which was announced Wednesday, is a multi-year agreement.

Burton has 20 career victories, including one this season at Bristol Motor Speedway. He is currently second in the Cup series standings and has qualified for the title-deciding Chase for the Sprint Cup the last two seasons.

Based on an agreement reached by AT&T and NASCAR last year, the telecommunications giant had to give up their sponsorship deal at the end of this season. The agreement came after a protracted legal battle between AT&T and Sprint after Sprint phased out the Cingular brand — one of two brands which were grandfathered in when Sprint (formerly Nextel) took over sponsor rights for the Cup Series.

Currently, Caterpillar sponsors Bill Davis Racing's No. 22 Toyota Camry driven by Dave Blaney. The manufacturer of industrial equipment has been involved in NASCAR since 1993, when it was an associate sponsor for Kyle Petty's No. 42 Pontiac. They joined Bill Davis Racing in 1999 and have sponsored the No. 22 Sprint Cup entry since.

CAT has five Sprint Cup wins to its record, including the 2002 Daytona 500 when Jeff's brother Ward guided them to Victory Lane.

Can you imagine, back in the day, Richard Childress is about to sign Dale Sr, But, the sponsor says no, he is to crass or to this or that, we need someone clean shaven, and then.. no Dale Sr. i know extream comparison, but it shows the evolution that is not the best for the sport, in my opinion..

The thing i do not like, is that now car owners have sponsors dictating who their driver is, u can not hire a driver without sponsor approval. A few good drivers lost their rides because of this and Ward Burton was one, and look how that worked out for Cat.. now, that is something to be upset about.

It is no differnt for golf, or naming a stadium in football of basketball, so why is it wrong for Nascar, when it was Winston Cup, nobody complained until all the save the whales people drove them out. I am not sticking up for Sprint, but, it is funny how people complain. Sprint paid alot of money to be the name of the Sprint Cup as did Winston, so if they wanted to be sole wirless company in Nascar, so what.

I don't get it. If a sponsor pays to be on any car and wants to be the only primary, so what.. The argument is the same for Sprint...

Its kinda bogus how a company can buy the name for a entire sport. What next...The Wilson Football Leage? Maybe Wells Fargo will buy exclusive rights to St. Paul and kick every other bank out of the city. Im going over board but its kinda crazy what sponsers can monopolize. Go Burton!!!

I think SPRINT SUCKS ASS. Friggin cry babies. We pay for the name so we don't want out competitors sponsoring anything in NASCAR CUP. I hope one day they crash and burn. Infact it just goes to show you waht NASCAR is all about, not the fans, not the racing, not even the sponsors, it's THE MONEY!

Alltell was not bought out of AT&T it was Verizon Wireless. And its good to see Catepillar on a winning car again next year.

Chad Little must have left a bad taste in John Deere's mouth because JD tried the sponsor deal with Roush and Little back in the late 90's As for Burton and AT&T, what sweet justice that would be for Burton and AT&T to go out champions in 08 on AT&T's last go round as a sponsor.....for now. And yeah look at my pic.....Burton and CAT what a great combo. I have so many CAT 22 die-casts from back when the 22 car was doing something. Hey Bill Davis....how's going without Ward????? Yeah thats what I thought oh and send my reguards to that tax cheating snake Gene Haas in prison for jacking Ward out of the then 0 car. Very happy to see RCR get CAT. Hopefully Ward will be back someday but even as a one of his biggest backers, I know its probably not likely

Railman: Very interesting information. You're right, Sprint used to be a good company. Just like Walmart used to be when it prided itself on "Made In the USA" goods back when Sam Walton was alive and before it became a greedy corporate conglomerate.

Yeah, why isn't John Deere a sponsor? They could partner up with CAT for Jeff Burton and be co-sponsors....oh wait, that wouldn't work, would it? Whoever, Jeff deserves a good sponsor. He's a class act.

I'd like to see AT&T become the new Sponsor of Nascar, but like Whit says, it's still the Winston Cup to me (although some of the older fans probably still see it as the Grand Nationals).

Good point chewton; how much you think Toyota and M&M's is paid Nascar to make peewee their poster child over night? They would rather show guys like Jr. and Edwards in the middle of the pack, then show the leaders if it's someone like R Gordon, or Truex. Andrew I agree; John Deere would be am awesome sponsor. I personally am getting tired of all the name changes nascar is makin. It's all about the dollar and not the racing. Who cares if Ward never won a "Sprint Race" Sprint car racing is the only real Sprint racing, and in my eyes it is still the Winston Cup.

Look for AT&T to be the "Cup Series" sponsor in the not too distant future !!!

Again NASCAR has shown that sponsorhsip loyality means nothing. AT&T which was BellSouth has been a part of NASCAR for many years and has invested millions and millions of dollars into the sport. On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if AT&T was not the "Series Cup" sponsor in the not too distant future !!!!!

Looks like CAT is a great sponsor to hang with Bill Davis for so long. I think both CAT and RCR are pleased with this deal.

It doesnt really matter who JB's sponsors will be for 09. The man was born to drive race cars! It's even in the family genetics. JB may not be the greatest driver ever but he puts his heart in it. You can tell by the class act he REALLY is. GO JEFF GO!!! We're behind you win or lose. Thanks for making NASCAR a real sport to watch with REAL
men who know how to conduct themselves in a REAL sport.
