The worst secret in the NASCAR garage is one step closer to becoming reality.

Ryan Newman has reached a verbal agreement with Stewart-Haas Racing to drive the No. 4 Chevrolet starting next season, sources told FOXSports.com.

Nothing has been signed and nothing is official, but a deal is close and a formal announcement is expected to take place in the next 4-5 weeks.

Guessing game

What will Ryan Newman's 2009 car look like? Take a look at Tony Stewart's new ride and predict what Newman's paint scheme will look like below.

  • Spencer: Stewart getting ready for '09
  • Among the details pending is a sponsor for Newman. Burger King is a likely candidate for at least partial sponsorship.

Newman, winner of this year's season-opening Daytona 500, announced on July 14 that he and Penske Racing mutually agreed not to renew their deal and to part ways at the end of the year.

Although the 30-year-old Newman had been rumored to be joining Tony Stewart in 2008, he was also a candidate for other high profile vacancies at Richard Childress Racing, Gillett Evernham Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing.

Since making his Sprint Cup Series debut in November 2000 for Penske Racing, "Rocket Man" has 13 victories, 63 top fives and 43 pole positions. He has finished as high as sixth in the championship standings, doing so in 2002, 2003 and 2005. Although he won the season-opener this year at Daytona, Newman has fallen to 16th in the standings and will likely fail to qualify for the title-deciding Chase for the Sprint Cup for the third consecutive season.

This is a freakin' joke. No owner driver has had any measure of success over the last decade. What makes Stewart think he's going to be successful? How is that team going to compete with Hendrick, Roush, Childress and Gibbs? And what the heck is one lap Ryan going to add to the mix? I'm not getting it at all.
Tony should have a sit down with Darell and Michael Waltrip and Ricky Rudd before he closes this deal.

smoke78... Thanks for your support of Newman. Rusty Waaahlace never got over Ryan's dominating 2003 season. Guess that was always one of the keys to Rusty's success; jealosy! Seriosly though, Ryan will be a great addition to Stewart/Hass Racing. With the season the COT is having, all I have to look forward to is Newman moving on to better horizons.

You know two years ago i would have cared but being that this year has been the worst year in Nascar I have lost that lovin feeling with this Series,I simply dont car anymore.
After last weeks ball dropping I come to realize that those who run the sport are simply over paid loosing sight of what matters most and turning its back to the so called Core Fans.
I wash my hands to this series, the right thing to do would be a complete do over of last weeks dry heave, reemburst fans ticket, anf all the top brass of Nascar quiting then turn over the company to a private firm who could turn this sport around.
I am through with waiting around as Nascar expects to see it get better, its been more then half the season and its just got worst so i wash my hands at this sport, unless it turns itslef around and fix the problems its thrown at it I wont watch another race.
Its just a matter of time before the forum here on this site of Nascar start showing empty seats, when this happens Nascar cant blame Fuel prices for the lost of its fan base.
Good Luck to you all, SUCKERS!! ;p
have a good one www.liveleak.com
no naked people, just good vids
Pat

I believe Ryan and Tony will get along fine. They are both strong willed and have a burning desire to win. Ryan had problems with Rusty because he, like most of us, don't care for whiney, egotistical, know it all drivers and besides, Rusty was way past his prime and was jealous of Ryan's quick start and finishing better in the points than him so many times.

I am very uneasy with Stewart and him together. Maybe Stewart being an owner will have more influence than Rusty and Kurt, but Ryan has always been a rebel by not being willing to drive same chasis and set ups. Stewart is going to have enough problems as a new owner and finding the line between his driving responsibilities and owner responsibilities. Look at Waltrip right now. Now have someone as bullheaded as Ryan... (sorry probably should have stubborn) Bur bullheaded does add flare dont it? My worry is within the first season the two are going to have off camera battles as well as a good potential for some on camera ones too. It ought to be interesting.
Now to be real egotistical as like either would listen to me. LOL they need to sit down and have that talk about who is the boss and possibilities of cars being in R&D mode for the first season or two.
The only way this team is going to ever get anywhere is if they find the problems and fix them. I just wish Zippy were going over with them.
I do not mean to slight Ryan, the guy has a lot of talent, but I think if he would have gotten along with Rusty and followed what he was trying to do by sharing chasis etc. Ryan would have had more wins under his belt. Sponsors are tough to get and more tough to keep. Dollars are drying up. Tony needs to come out of the box atleast meiocre to survive. My thoughts anyways.
