Analysis:
Reed Sorenson has agreed in principle to drive for Gillett Evernham Motorsports beginning next season, sources told FOXSports.com.
Although Sorenson has a contract to remain at Ganassi, he said after he qualified (30th), "I haven't signed anything yet."
Still, he seemed more perplexed with his Bristol car than where he would race next season.
"I love this place," Sorenson added. "I've finished in the top five three times. They made changes to Juan's (Ganassi teammate Montoya) before qualifying and he slowed down."
The Peachtree City, Ga., native is completing his third full season of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition, all as driver of the No. 41 Target Dodge for Ganassi. In his 96 career Cup races, Sorenson has amassed a record of five top fives, 13 top 10s and one pole (Indianapolis, 2006). His best career season was last year, when he finished 22nd in the championship standings.
This season, Sorenson is mired in 30th place in the championship. His best finish of the year came at the season-opening Daytona 500, where he ran fifth.
Prior to taking over the No. 41 ride, Sorenson drove full time for Ganassi in the Busch Series (now Nationwide Series). In 2005, he had two victories and finished fifth in the standings.
Should the deal be completed, the 2009 season will be the fourth season Ganassi will have at least one driver change: Both Sterling Marlin and Jamie McMurray departed after the 2005 season, Casey Mears was not retained after 2006, and David Stremme was replaced by Dario Franchitti after 2007. Earlier this year, Franchitti's No. 40 team ceased operations after sponsorship was not found.
