Long-time Gillett Evernham Motorsports technical director Sammy Johns will step in as interim crew chief for the No. 10 Dodge and driver AJ Allmendinger this weekend.

Crew chief Mike Shiplett was suspended from the team activities this week for missing the flight home from Phoenix last weekend.

Shiplett, 36, joined GEM in 2000. He moved to the No. 10 car this year to work with rookie Patrick Carpentier after a stint in the Nationwide Series.

The pair parted ways after the Talladega race last month when Shiplett blamed Carpentier for not qualifying the car. The team missed the race and dropped to 39th in points.

Allmendinger jumped in the No. 10 Dodge at Martinsville Speedway and has scored two top-15 finishes in the last four races.
