Gibbs builds on NASCAR blueprint
by Nate Ryan , USA TODAY
In its second season in AMA Monster Energy Supercross, JGR, whose team is based out of the same Huntersville, N.C., shop that houses its NASCAR operations, is showing signs its stock-car blueprint might work. Josh Grant is fourth in the standings and won the season opener for JGR in Anaheim, Calif.
"I've won a lot of things, but that was one of my biggest thrills," says Gibbs, who coached the Washington Redskins to three Super Bowl wins.
The team is managed by Coy Gibbs, who told his father he wanted to start a motocross team after his stint as a Redskins assistant ended with Joe Gibbs' NFL retirement last year. Gibbs' other son, J.D., is president of JGR's NASCAR team.
"Coy didn't want to follow J.D.," Joe Gibbs says. "This is his way of developing a program on his own."
As kids, the Gibbs brothers often went to motorcycle races with their dad, who once dabbled in motocross riding and now aspires to win a title in the sport's highest level.
"It's extremely tough, but that's the dream," Joe Gibbs says. "We're here for the long haul and want to be one of the dominant teams."
