WARD WINS WEIRD ONE

Crazy things tend to happen at the Daytona 500, but even veteran NASCAR observers had to be blown away by what happened on lap 195 of the 2002 version. Jeff Gordon had to pit when pit road was closed. Sterling Marlin was penalized for working on his car during a red flag. And that left the door wide open for Burton only led for five laps all afternoon, but they were the laps that mattered most. And as a result, a Dodge — which wasn't supposed to have a chance to win — finished first at Daytona for the first time since 1974. It was an ending so strange, it almost had to be scripted. In fact, FOXSports.com's Dave Van Dyck It would be the only way to explain the strangest turn of events in the Sunshine State since the 2000 presidential election. In addition to the chaos that knocked both Gordon and Marlin out of contention, were knocked out of the running earlier in the race, most notably Tony Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Then on lap 149, there was an involving several of the leaders.

It was one year ago that Dale Earnhardt was killed on the last lap of the Daytona 500, just as two cars he owned headed for the checkered flag. In so many ways, Dale Earnhardt still lives in death. In so many places, his memory is still vivid.
