Plenty of weekend action even without Sprint Cup

FOX race analyst Larry McReynolds has more than 30 years of NASCAR experience as a mechanic, Daytona 500-winning crew chief and broadcaster. He earned 23 Cup wins as a crew chief, including two victories in the prestigious Daytona 500, as well as a pair of non-points victories in the annual all-star race.

Even though the NASCAR Sprint Cup series is idle, we still have a couple unique races this weekend. Keep an eye on the Nationwide series, which is in Canada for a road course. Since the Mexico Nationwide race was eliminated, this is the only race outside the United States. This is their fifth year going to Montreal and it is an extremely popular event. Also, it's a bit of a challenge for the smaller Nationwide series teams. Those guys race mid-May to mid-September, which is like 16 or 17 weeks in a row without a break. It's a much longer stretch than even the Cup series. With the Cup boys being idle, it allows those guys that run full Cup and either full Nationwide or part-time Nationwide an opportunity to race. Also, you will see your road race specialists running this weekend as well. My point is that you are going to have a pretty good variety of guys there. It's one of the few times, if not the only time, the Nationwide race occurs on a Sunday — so it's a headline weekend for them, you might say. Some folks think there should be more road courses in the Cup and Nationwide series, but I disagree with that. I think two per series is the maximum and I think it's a good balance. We don't need to be running more. But in the same breath, I don't think we should be running less. The thing that makes it tougher for the Nationwide guys is scheduling their road tracks so close together. In Cup, there is one in June and then the other is in August. With the Nationwide series, both road courses are scheduled in August. Now, over in the truck series, this will be the first time ever they will race at Chicagoland. It's amazing to realize that NASCAR has been going to Chicagoland since 2001 with Cup and Nationwide, but never the trucks. What shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone is that Kyle Busch is going to race both at Chicagoland and at Montreal. I don't blame him. He has a really decent points lead in the Nationwide series. With the truck race on Friday night and the Nationwide race on Sunday, Kyle isn't forced into one of these back and forth, back and forth deals. I applaud him for doing it.
