Austin, Ty Dillon in title battles
Things might be tense in the Dillon household this weekend.
Friday night, Ty Dillon is battling for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series title. He enters the race third in the standings, 12 points behind leader James Buescher.
Saturday, Austin Dillon will vie for the NASCAR Nationwide Series title. He also enters his race third in the standings, 25 points behind Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
The Dillons, grandsons of team owner Richard Childress, seem to be taking the pressure in stride. Austin Dillon, 22, won the Truck crown last year and is watching his younger brother try to keep it in the family.
“It's a great week with coming to Homestead and both having a chance to win a championship,” Austin Dillon said. “RCR won the Cup race last week. That was really big for our team, and welcome to North Carolina. It's good right now. Yeah, it's a good year other than -- I am pushing Ty. I hope he can finish off the championship, and I think he's got a great shot going into Friday."
Trying to follow in his brother’s footsteps, says 20-year-old Ty, has led to quite a bit of advice all around.
“Everybody knows my family, so they like to talk, so I'm getting plenty of advice,” he said. “It's been great, and the best advice is just to go out and win races. That's the way to gain the most points in NASCAR, and that's the only thing I can look to do. Pressure is off of us, just go win races, and that's what got it for my brother who won the championship last year, my dad (Mike Dillon) and my grandfather, everybody at RCR has been helpful, so we're just heading down trying to win a race.”
And he’s not pulling any punches concerning what it will take for him to win the title.
While the Truck series is one of the most competitive and aggressive in the NASCAR ranks, Dillon isn’t counting on someone else’s trouble to net him the title. His focus is solely on his own effort.
“My number is one,” he said. “We've got to win the race and lead the most laps and put the pressure on everybody else. That's our main focus this weekend, and anything short of that is not going to be acceptable for us to win the championship I don't think.”
As for Austin Dillon, he’ll need a little more help to overcome his Nationwide points deficit.
Can he do it? He’s not ruling it out – especially when he has a chance to try to stir things up between the two men in front of him, Stenhouse and Elliott Sadler.
“I get along with both of them, but I hope it gets nasty on Saturday personally,” he says. “I hope they door slam each other off of Turn 4 and I make it through the smoke.
“No, I'm actually waiting for Elliott to get back Ricky when he owes him at Richmond and Bristol this year. I'm still trying to figure out when that's going to happen.”
