Bowyer glad to see Logano-Hamlin feud
FONTANA, Calif.
Clint Bowyer is relieved that there’s a new rivalry in NASCARland – and he’s not part of it.
BOOGITY! BOOGITY! BOOGITY!
NASCAR returns to FOX at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 26. The green flag drops at 6 p.m. ET, with coverage on FOX beginning at 5:30 p.m. ET.
When it comes to recent feuds, Bowyer’s name has been mentioned repeatedly following his altercation with Jeff Gordon at Phoenix International Raceway last November.
But now the spotlight has moved.
While Bowyer reviewed the highlights of last week’s events in the Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway, he couldn’t resist the “little fireworks at the end” when Joey Logano approached Denny Hamlin after the race.
Hamlin punted Logano on Lap 348 while the No. 22 Penske Racing Ford was still a contender.
“I’m so proud of Denny and Joey,” Bowyer said with a laugh. “They did such a good job. It was great. It's just good to see that. Emotions are high at a short track and things happen and (it's) no different than what happened at Phoenix.
“It's entertainment. It's fun to see people get pissed off and it was – it caught me off guard. I was in the middle of an interview and it's always weird doing those radio interviews when you can actually hear yourself over the loudspeaker and the stadium, coliseum – whatever you want to call Bristol – you hear yourself talking and about that time I look over and pan across the big screen and there's a fight unraveling on the big screen and I was like, I just felt the need to take over the announcement of that particular fight or screaming, whatever you want to call it. It was fun there for a minute.
"I was really wanting to announce the 'Duke City,' you know, 'Here he comes, it was an uppercut ladies and gentleman,' but it didn't get that far unfortunately."
Bowyer finished second in the points standings last year despite the drama that followed him into the season-finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Bowyer did his best to deflect questions of that dustup in the desert despite the sprint from his car to the garage to confront Gordon appearing almost on a continual loop leading up to this year's race at the track.
This year, Bowyer’s trying to put the situation behind him. After the first four races this season, Bowyer is fourth in the points standings. With the first off week of the season approaching after the Auto Club 400, Bowyer is hoping to get far away where he can’t be reached.
"Well, I've got to hurry up and make a plan because I've already filled up two days just as of today,” Bowyer said of his sponsor and team commitments. “This morning (Michael Waltrip Racing has) already filled up two days of my off time, so I'm going to come up with – I think I'm just going to Alaska. I'm leaving somewhere. I'm going to be gone. It's amazing how busy they can get you in a short amount of time."
