Think Robert De Niro was a crazy cab driver? Check out Stewart's day as a Vegas cabbie.But for a few minutes Wednesday afternoon in Las Vegas, driving the speed limit in a cab around The Strip did the trick just as well for one lucky fan.
Sure, Stewart still is performing the duties of a two-time NASCAR champion, posing for pictures and participating in various media obligations, but did you know the Sprint Cup superstar also moonlights as a cabbie?
Or at least he did Wednesday in a made-for-TV event (make sure to check out highlights during Sunday's NASCAR on FOX coverage of the Kobalt Tools 400 at 2:30 p.m. ET), which was promoting Lucky Cab LV and the role it serves for Stewart's new primary sponsor, Mobil 1.
“Not too many people would think of a cab company being the final proving ground for a synthetic motor oil, but that's exactly what Lucky Cab is for Mobil 1,” Stewart explained. “You think about the conditions that they are in. Think about cars idling — that's really hard on your engine and the cooling system. These cars sit for a ratio of 3 to 1 over the time they are moving. To have the temperature shifts they go through here — if the oil can withstand what's going on out here, it can make it anywhere. So, it's pretty cool that Mobil 1 has a partner like this that is willing to let them go through those steps and make sure (that it works). This is field testing.”
So, when it was time for his shift, Stewart suited up, climbed in a retrofitted street legal Sprint Cup car and got ready for his first fare of the day.
“Smoke! You're up!”
Stewart drove to the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino to pick up an assortment of celebrities, as well as one lucky fan who got to go along for the ride.
Passengers included an Elvis impersonator, magician David Copperfield and Miss Sprint Cup Kim Coon. But for David Lynch, a submarine force master chief for the Pacific Fleet, it was the opportunity of a lifetime.
Earlier in the day, the Honolulu resident and 25-year Navy veteran was walking into the MGM with his wife when Mobil 1's PR team noticed his No. 14 hat. They approached him about taking “not your average cab ride.”
“It's just a dream,” said Lynch, a decorated soldier who, when wearing his military uniform, has medals for meritorious service, achievement and good conduct among others on his lapel. “(The car) is super powerful. It's just such a surreal experience. I can't believe I did it. (Stewart) is obviously the best.”
Before the start of his “shift,” Stewart envisioned such an experience.
“It is fun. I'm sure there's going to be some people that don't know it's us when we come up there. That's going to be the fun part — to surprise them.” Stewart said. “We do a lot of appearances, we do a lot of events where the fans know ahead of time what we are doing, but this is one of those deals where nobody is going to see this coming.”
Lynch never saw it coming, but he sure is glad he went along for the ride.
