| On Track with Larry Mac |
NASCAR on FOX analyst Larry McReynolds scouts Dover International Speedway.
Adapting to this track
- Some teams stiffen up the chassis for the two concrete tracks -- Dover and Bristol. You want a car with as much downforce as possible.
- The engine combination can be tricky. When you come off the corner, you drive straight up a hill, so you need good bottom-end torque. And because the rpms stay up there and you aren't out of the throttle much, you need good top-end power, too. The track is fairly tough on engines.
Plotting strategy
- One thing you fight at this track is getting the cars to roll off into the corners. You don't want to be loose getting in, and you sure don't want the car to push coming off the corners. Before you know it, you're in the wall. There's a big focus on the turns because they are long and sweeping.
- Pit road at Dover is one of the most treacherous on the circuit. It is very narrow, and the pit boxes are small. Driver and crew must be alert.
Where the action is
- This track is like a vacuum cleaner. If you get loose and spin, your single-car mishap turns into a five- or six-car pileup when you slide down the steep banking.
- Passing at Dover takes a while. You'll start to make the pass in the corner and won't complete it until you're way down the straightaway, almost to the entrance of the next turn.
