Scouting Report

Though far from dominant in his only season at Florida, Beal did enough to show NBA teams he's worthy of a top-five selection after being one of the nation's most coveted high school prospects. A do-it-all guard who has a pro-ready body and fluid style, Beal is an excellent shooter who defends well and rebounds as capably as any backcourt player in this draft. The first-team All-SEC pick turns 19 on draft day, but Gators coach Billy Donovan recently said he is "as mature a kid at this age as I've ever been around." A shooting guard who is able to man the point, he averaged 14.8 points this season - second on the Gators - despite playing in a three-guard lineup with longtime starters Kenny Boynton and Erving Walker. Beal topped Florida with 6.7 rebounds per game even though he was one of the smallest players on the roster. The majority of his points come from the perimeter - he hit 15 of 35 from beyond the arc over the SEC and NCAA tournaments - but he's also very good at creating his own shot as a fearless driver and competent ball-handler. The 2011 Gatorade national player of the year after averaging 32.5 points as a high school senior, Beal overcame some early struggles with the Gators to become arguably their most reliable player. He averaged a team-leading 15.8 points during Florida's NCAA tournament run to the West regional final as a No. 7 seed. A high level of confidence kept Beal on track and should serve him well at the next level, as will his strong work ethic. Being a standout defensively also could lead to plenty of minutes as a rookie, as he averaged a team-high 1.4 steals for Florida.
