NBA 73 43 10 burning questions for the NBA playoffs 11135446 Can the Lakers find the right switch? Can+the+Lakers+find+the+right+switch%3F+ NBA A really risky maneuver for any team is attempting to perform well after drifting into a prolonged lull. This is referred to as "flipping the switch." Based on their recent play, the defending champion Lakers are behaving like the drunk in an unfamiliar bathroom, groping along the wall for the light switch. The main issue seems to be superstar Kobe Bryant's physical ability to dominate with a balky knee, a broken finger and teammates who may be far less committed than he is. The Lakers also are hoping center Andrew Bynum can (A) return and (B) have something to contribute if and when he plays. -- Randy Hill

NBA 73 43 10 burning questions for the NBA playoffs 11135444 Will Shaq Diesel slow down the Cavs? Will+Shaq+Diesel+slow+down+the+Cavs%3F+ NBA With LeBron James possessing the ability to run opposing teams into the ground, it's assumed that Shaquille O'Neal's presence dials back Cleveland's transition potential. But in playoff basketball, guys like LeBron and Coach Mike Brown are more interested in slowing things down -- Brown because he likes it that way and LeBron wants to make sure the next shot is either his or created by him. OK, so the Cavs probably won't need O'Neal to thrive against the Bulls in Round 1. With the Celtics looming as Round 2 opponents, Shaq might come in handy. And if Cleveland finds itself in a rematch with Orlando in the East finals, O'Neal gives them six more fouls to use against Dwight Howard.

NBA 73 43 10 burning questions for the NBA playoffs 11135445 Can Vince bring some sanity to halfcourt offense? Can+Vince+bring+some+sanity+to+halfcourt+offense%3F+ NBA When the Magic went out and got veteran swingman Vince Carter, they envisioned an offensive threat who could create opportunities for himself and others when set plays break down and Dwight Howard's free-throw issues eliminate late-game post-up strategy.  Well, Vince has provided a bit of a roller-coaster performance during his first year with the Magic; he'll have to demonstrate more consistency -- and sense of purpose -- if Orlando is to roll through the first two rounds and into another showdown with the Cavaliers. We'll see how ready he is in a big hurry, because the Magic open with the Charlotte Bobcats and wing tough guy Gerald Wallace.

NBA 73 43 10 burning questions for the NBA playoffs 11135396 Will Spurs have enough moments to challenge? Will+Spurs+have+enough+moments+to+challenge%3F NBA Nagging injuries to Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili along with interludes of rest for Tim Duncan conspired to make the Spurs seem toothless at times this season. But Parker recently zipped back into the lineup, Duncan remains a 20-and-10 machine and Ginobili finished the regular season as one of the most productive players in the league. Those guys alone make the Spurs ... wait for it ... a team nobody wants to see in the first round. If George Hill and Richard Jefferson also peak at the right time, the Spurs can validate their rank of dangerous team when they take on second-seeded Dallas in Round 1. NBA 73 43 10 burning questions for the NBA playoffs 11135450 Will Nuggets get a lift from George Karl? Will+Nuggets+get+a+lift+from+George+Karl%3F NBA The Denver Nuggets, whose rogue cast of characters inspires feelings of doubt in league observers and occasional dread in supporters, are working this postseason with uncertainty surrounding Coach George Karl. Karl is battling throat and neck cancer, having recently completed an extensive round of chemotherapy. According to reports, he'll probably miss the first round, but could return for the conference semis. Although many critics may disagree, George seems like the perfect boss to work with a roster that includes J.R. Smith and Kenyon Martin.  With no timetable set for George's availability, we'll have to see if Chauncey Billups and Carmelo Anthony can take Denver into the second round without him ... or even deeper with him.

NBA 73 43 10 burning questions for the NBA playoffs 11135443 Was pre-deadline trade enough for Mavs? Was+pre-deadline+trade+enough+for+Mavs%3F NBA Before shipping Josh Howard to the Wizards, Dallas had a really nice team that seemed to lack enough pop to reach the NBA Finals. But the Mavs' return on that trade included quality contributors named Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood, giving Coach Rick Carlisle enough depth and firepower to make observers truly wonder. Dirk Nowitzki is a premier player and now has considerable help on the offensive end. Butler may lack Howard's defensive mobility on the wing, but Dallas now has Shawn Marion, and the addition of Haywood -- when teamed with Erick Dampier -- gives the Mavs two legitimate centers with differing strengths and limitations.

NBA 73 43 10 burning questions for the NBA playoffs 11135449 Do veteran C's have enough energy to climb through window? Do+veteran+C%27s+have+enough+energy+to+climb+through+window%3F NBA With the opening in their window of opportunity looking skinny, the Boston Celtics will attempt a physical and emotional rally that propels them through the Eastern Conference playoffs. It won't be easy, especially without home-court edge in the semifinal and final rounds (barring an upset). But the Celtics have enough knowledge and residual skill to rise up and smite any team ... right? Well, they have a decent shot if Kevin Garnett has sufficient mobility to defend like a caged lion. Boston also needs a boost from vets Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, with Rajon Rondo making sure the old dogs are fed on time.

NBA 73 43 10 burning questions for the NBA playoffs 11135395 Will Suns defend at a successful playoff level? Will+Suns+defend+at+a+successful+playoff+level%3F NBA The Suns have posted the league's second-best record since the All-Star break not only because of their racehorse offensive attack. They've also boasted the fourth-best field-goal percentage defense during this time. No, Steve Nash has yet to stop behaving like a turnstile at the point of their defensive wall, but Amar'e Stoudemire is providing more effort on D and on the boards. Phoenix also  receives considerable defensive energy from bench workers named Jared Dudley and Lou Amundson, while aging Grant Hill gives his all as a starter at small forward.

NBA 73 43 10 burning questions for the NBA playoffs 11135442 Are the Blazers better off without Brandon Roy? Are+the+Blazers+better+off+without+Brandon+Roy%3F NBA With Portland's star undergoing surgery for a torn meniscus in his right knee, at least a few Blazer fans have been wondering if the team might be better without Roy even when he's healthy. Hey, they think they have some evidence on that one -- post-meniscus victories over the Lakers and Thunder. This has inspired Roy critics to point out that the Blazers have superior movement of the ball on offense without their star player. This is a fine point to make -- who doesn't prefer superior movement of the ball? -- but the importance of a premier player in the postseason shouldn't be underestimated.

NBA 73 43 10 burning questions for the NBA playoffs 11135394 Will Thunder act their age? Will+Thunder+act+their+age%3F NBA Evidence suggests the young team from Oklahoma City has the capacity to perform like wise veterans on the defensive end. Unfortunately, the Thunder often play to chronological form when it comes to taking care of the ball on offense. That means they really don't. The playoff season is no time to be sloppy. Anyway, now that he's established himself as a superstar of the present, young gunslinger Kevin Durant will be obliged to offer proof of this greatness in the playoffs during a first-round series against the Los Angeles Lakes and Ron Artest.  The key to victory -- and a second round in the playoff tavern -- depends on how much pressure the Thunder can apply on both ends of the floor against a veteran team that has staggered past the regular-season finish line. -- Randy Hill
