Being rich or successful at business doesn't necessarily make someone a good NBA owner. It takes a commitment to winning, a positive organizational culture and often the humility necessary to get out of the way and trust your basketball people to make smart decisions. These five guys hurt their franchises by being in charge.

Incompetent? Clueless? Cheap? The worst owner in American sports is responsible for the most embarrassing franchise in NBA history. Yes, things have turned around since Chris Paul fell into his lap in 2011. But Sterling has still presided over just four winning seasons since buying the Clippers in 1981. Nevertheless, he rakes in plenty of profits by virtue of playing in such a large media market. Who says mismanagement doesn't pay?

He has every advantage an NBA owner could want. The league's largest market. Huge revenue streams. A desirable destination for free agents. A franchise with a proud history. Passionate fans. Yet Dolan royally screwed everything up for a full decade, mainly by enabling Isiah Thomas but also with his own ugly and inept management style. Getting Amar'e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony makes the Knicks relevant again, but they're still far from a title contender or a well-run organization.

In his seven years as an NBA owner, the league's greatest player has shown a knack for getting rid of talent, not amassing it. Just in the last few years, he's let Tyson Chandler, Gerald Wallace and Stephen Jackson go for almost nothing. His drafts have been abysmal too, leaving the franchise with no star power besides, well, his own.

Amazing how much things have regressed since the early 2000s, when Gavin and Joe Maloof were the fun-loving, filthy-rich owners bringing success, excitement and pride to the cowtown capital of California. With their casino fortune fading, the Maloofs gutted their franchise and tried to sell it to buyers who would move the team to Seattle. Other NBA owners nixed the move, however, and the Maloofs were forced to make a deal with a Sacramento group for less money.

Small market, cold city, no tradition. Yes, it's tough to build a winner in Minnesota. Still, Taylor is a big reason the Wolves have gotten past the first round of the playoffs just once in his 20 years as owner. He got busted for a "secret" contract to Joe Smith. He failed to build around Kevin Garnett and now has nothing to show for trading him. He hired a former sportswriter, David Kahn, to run the team, which has been in the lottery for nine straight years. One of America's richest men keeps making poor decisions.
