NBA Power Rankings

After getting off to great starts the past two seasons, the Celtics are at it again. They opened the 2009-10 season by beating LeBron and Shaq in Cleveland, held the Bobcats to 59 points, then reeled off two more wins to leapfrog the Cavs and the Pau-less Lakers in the Week 1 Power Rankings.

| NBA Power Rankings Week Of 11/03/2009 | |||||
| Rk | Team | Last Wk | Rise/Fall | High/Low | Comment |
| 1 | 3 | (+2) | 1/3 | (4-0) Rondo just got the superstar contract, but he barely needs to score on this team. He's averaging nearly twice as many assists as points. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 2 | 4 | (+2) | 2/4 | (3-0) Ryan Anderson's already proving to be more than a throw-in in the Vince Carter deal. With 11 treys in three games, he's filling the Rashard Lewis role to perfection. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 3 | 1 | (-2) | 1/3 | (2-1) Once Gasol comes back, they'll likely move back into the top two. But for now, they're not a great team, especially with Artest still trying to fit in.
Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy
| 4 | 6 | (+2) | 4/6 | (3-0) With two 40-point games already, Carmelo may be on the way to his first scoring title. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 5 | 5 | - | 5/5 | (2-1) After having little depth last season, Spurs go 10 deep. So injuries shouldn't be quite as devastating when they occur. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 6 | 2 | (-4) | 2/6 | (2-2) The Magic started 0-2 last year and went to the NBA Finals. In other words, there's plenty of time to get this right, though Shaq's early returns aren't promising. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 7 | 9 | (+2) | 7/9 | (2-1) Leaving Los Angeles with two wins is like leaving Las Vegas with twice as much money. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 8 | 11 | (+3) | 8/11 | (3-0) They're on fire so far, but five-game East Coast swing may cool them off.
Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy
| 9 | 13 | (+4) | 9/13 | (3-0) There is an O'Neal who's looking fit, happy and rejuvenated -- and it's Jermaine, not Shaq. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 10 | 14 | (+4) | 10/14 | (3-1) With plucky roster and Rick Adelman on the bench, no surprise that Rockets are already overachieving.
Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy
| 11 | 12 | (+1) | 11/12 | (2-1) Joe Johnson called Hawks "soft" after loss to Lakers. He's right. Talent makes them an upper-tier team, but lack of toughness keeps them out of the elite. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 12 | 7 | (-5) | 7/12 | (2-2) Given their youth, inconsistency is understandable early on. If they progress as expected, they may be a top-five team eventually. But not now.
Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy
| 13 | 18 | (+5) | 13/18 | (2-1) Arenas looks like his old self again. Andray Blatche looks like a new man. Both are great developments for the Wiz, especially with Jamison and Butler hurting. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 14 | 17 | (+3) | 14/17 | (2-1) They don't miss Andre Miller so far thanks to Lou Williams, who's leading the team in scoring and has just two turnovers. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 15 | 10 | (-5) | 10/15 | (1-2) Boozer's bad start is the last thing Jazz needed. The fans don't like him, which takes away some of Utah's usual home-court advantage. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 16 | 19 | (+3) | 16/19 | (1-2) Will beating Cavs in opener be highlight of their season? You have to wonder when they follow that with a loss to Memphis. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 17 | 15 | (-2) | 15/17 | (1-2) Offense is a problem without Ben Gordon. The Bulls already didn't have a low-post threat. Now they don't have any good 3-point shooters either. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 18 | 20 | (+2) | 18/20 | (2-1) Durant's 3-for-21 night vs. Portland got a lot of attention, but the story of OKC's first week was its own defense. None of Thunder's first three opponents cracked 90 points. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 19 | 8 | (-11) | 8/19 | (1-3) With eight points in four games, Posey's one reason Hornets bench may be even worse than last year. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 20 | 16 | (-4) | 16/20 | (1-2) You only really appreciate Rip Hamilton when he's not playing. Then you see how bad Detroit is without him. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 21 | 23 | (+2) | 21/23 | (2-2) Bounced back after opening debacle against Boston, but scoring will be an issue all season. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 22 | 21 | (-1) | 21/22 | (1-4) Let's see. Critical injury. Second-half meltdowns. Disappointed fans. Yep, another season begins for the Clippers. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 23 | 24 | (+1) | 23/24 | (1-3) Two big fourth-quarter comebacks went for naught in overtime losses. But Nate Robinson's knee injury was the biggest bummer of opening week. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 24 | 22 | (-2) | 22/24 | (0-2) Ford's awful start and Foster's injury spell trouble for talent-challenged Pacers. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 25 | 27 | (+2) | 25/27 | (1-1) Bucks really needed Redd to stay healthy this season. Now there's too much pressure on rookie Brandon Jennings, who's already playing better in the NBA than he did in Europe. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 26 | 26 | - | 26/26 | (0-2) A discouraging opening week only adds to the offseason negativity. If this week's cupcake schedule (Grizzlies, Clippers, Kings, T-Wolves) doesn't turn things around, things will really get ugly in Nellie-ville. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 27 | 25 | (-2) | 25/27 | (1-3) Offense isn't a problem for the Grizz. Defense is. Iverson's return doesn't change that. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 28 | 30 | (+2) | 28/30 | (1-3) Martin's 48 points vs. Grizzlies was great, but 67 points from the bench was even better. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 29 | 29 | - | 29/29 | (1-3) It took a miraculous comeback to beat the Nets in the opener. Winning 20 games may require 19 more minor miracles. Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | |
| 30 | 28 | (-2) | 28/30 | (0-4) First Jarvis Hayes. Then Devin Harris. Now Yi Jianlian. For a team that couldn't afford injuries, the Nets have had a half-season's worth in one week.
