Houston Rockets Roster Report
by Sports Xchange
Joey Dorsey, F, 6-7, Memphis -- Strong and physical interior defender more likely to play early, probably likely as a backup center. Drafted by Portland, acquired by Rockets in trade.
Maarty Leunen, F, 6-9, Oregon -- Range-shooting 4 the Rockets plan to keep overseas for at least a few seasons.
BIGGEST NEEDS: The Rockets filled the void at backup shooting guard and small forward left by the trade-deadline deals of Bonzi Wells and Kirk Snyder by acquiring Ron Artest. They dealt point guard Bobby Jackson to get Artest, potentially making the point their biggest need, though they hope that Aaron Brooks, Steve Francis and Brent Barry will be able to handle the load.
FREE AGENT FOCUS: Rookie forward Carl Landry is a restricted free agent but has said he wants to return to the Rockets, and the Rockets have said they want him back and would match any offer he receives as a free agent.
Center Dikembe Mutombo is a free agent and the Rockets would bring him back if he wants to extend his career, but he has said he will again consider retiring in the offseason.
PLAYER NOTES:
--F Chuck Hayes suffered a broken nose during a recent workout. He had surgery on Aug. 28 to repair it and should be fine for camp.
--C Dikembe Mutombo was in China for the Olympic Games and planned to visit with Rockets general manager Daryl Morey there, but no contract talks were expected. Mutombo's agent, David Falk, said Mutombo would not play for the veteran's minimum.
--F Carl Landry remains a restricted free agent, but his agent Buddy Baker and Rockets general manager Daryl Morey began talks again after the Las Vegas summer league. Baker has said Landry is seriously considering options but would still like to play for the Rockets.
--G Luther Head played for the USA Basketball select team in practices against the Olympic team.
