Report: Sonics would leave name in Seattle
by FOXSports.com
Sonics chairman Clay Bennett told team sponsors at a function in Santa Monica, Calif. on Friday that he wants to negotiate a deal where the city retains everything about the franchise except it's players and coaches, according to a report Tuesday in the Seattle Times.
Sonics spokesman Dan Mahoney confirmed Bennett's statement to the Times on Monday.
Bennett is pushing for a buyout of the Sonics' lease in Seattle in an effort to move the team to Oklahoma City. His ownership group made a $26.5 million offer that was rejected by city officials, prompting Bennett to send a letter to city attorney Tom Carr that read: "We understand the city's desire to reserve the Sonics name for a future franchise and will support the city's effort with the NBA on this issue."
Gov. Christine Gregoire spoke with Bennett on March 5, according to the report, at which time Bennett re-affirmed his desire to move.
"He made it very clear to me and not in a nasty way at all in his words, unequivocally, 'Not for sale,'" Gregoire told the Times earlier this month. "At some point, we have to accept that."
Verbal protests chimed through KeyArena on Monday as the Sonics played host to the Portland TrailBlazers, the crowd chanting "Save Our Sonics" at every opportunity.
"Messed me up a little bit," Sonics rookie Kevin Durant said of the reaction. "But I heard them and that's something I love. The crowd was into it tonight and that shows they're going to stick behind us."
If the proposed buyout goes through, Monday's game could've been the last between the longtime rivals.
A large group of supporters purchased a block of tickets behind the Portland bench, holding signs and leading chants showing their support for keeping the NBA in Seattle.
In response, a noticeable security presence was at the arena. A Sonics spokesman said the increased security was because of information received that fans may try and disrupt the game. There were no incidents, just the end of Seattle's second losing streak of 10 or more games this season.
"As we got going in the second half and when we made our runs and opened up the lead, they got into the game," Seattle coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "Our fans have been great all year."
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Thank God! Is it really all over? Did the Sonics really leave town? Let's hope so.

Now, OKC, it's your turn: to be gouged, threatened and cajoled by the mighty marketing muscle that is the NBA. Of course, cajoling won't be enough in season's two or three; by then it will take threats to leave town and take the traveling circus to the next stop on the ever-declining list of cities who can choke down the NBA's acidic mix of over-paid thugs and community blackmail. Three years from now these blogs will be filled with Okie's whining that their fine new NBA team, so recently stolen from Seattle, is threatening to leave town because OK won't pay for another new stadium/practice facility/girls locker room/new cadillacs for the teams dog/morning-after pills for the cheerleaders - or whatever other creative demands David Stern and his lackey Clay Bennett will attempt to enforce.

Who knows - by the time Las Vegas/Billings, MT/ Fargo, ND/Des Moines, IA suffer the exact same fate, maybe America will finally WAKE UP and grind Stern and his NBA thugs into fertilizer and perhaps we can start again from the ground up.

Nah, that'll never happen. Americans are just too gullible. Parade a bunch of under-educated, over-drugged "athletes" and tell them that they're 's team and the fawning, gullible taxpayers will come running out to greet them with naive admiration and billions in tax giveaways.

Come to think of it, maybe we DO deserve the NBA and David Stern. We're all too wrapped up in our respective hometown jingoism to see this ugliness for what it really is.

I feel so inferior to the greatness of the Seattle local:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfSUlxj1k1Y&feat...

I apologize to the entire state of Oklahoma for some of the comments. I am from Bellevue WA, of which Seattle is a suburb. You have to understand the sheer arrogance and vanity of the typical Seattleite.

The local free weekly ('Seattle Weekly') even runs a column that parodies this--it's called 'Ask an uptight Seattleite.' If you ever visit Seattle you will see homeless, toothless meth addicts, etc. crapping in the streets. So what you're dealing with here is what psychiatrists would term 'projection.'

It's a bizarre phenomenon but it WILL happen if the Sonics move to OKC. That is, the players will start to look like each other, their jaws will turn inward, and the entire fan base will show up at the barn dance immediately following the game.

Read Okie Mom's two blogs....Nothing more has to be said for what a disgrace it is that we would subject athletes to that kind of a fan base. (that why we had back to back winner; most of you is...) Wow,do I hear a scary fiddle song?

THE NBA AND DAVID STERN ARE DRIVEN BY GREED AND ARE CORRUPT ..... just take a look at the way the sale went in Vancouver for the Grizzlies to Heisley .... he folded and moved the team after one season! Grizzlies only lasted 6 seasons in Vancouver, if we had got Nash or a proper GM (not Stu Jackson - who was recently fired by the NBA) and maybe if the rest of the in-house people were not a bunch of kiss**** we could have had a real organization! BUT WE'LL NEVER KNOW, THANKS TO STERN AND HEISLEY THE SLEEZY FAT... LOOK HOW HE'S GONNA SCREW MEMPHIS, ................ WHAT DID HE GET FOR GASOL = NOTHING!

........... Keep up the good work Stern, luv what you did for Vancouver, looks like the same deal in Seattle! Thanks from an admiring NBA fan and former employee!

Isn't it ironic that the the ONLY Seattle based professional team to ever win the city a major sports championship is moving? All those years that have gone by when the Mariners and Seahawks were practically given gifts for not winning anything;as in new stadiums, while the Sonics continued to play in the same place. So when the time came that the Sonics wanted a bit of help to remodel/renovate their home, the city came up with lots of excuses not to until the 11th hour when they realized that excuses offered for being srubborn and inaction results in a team relocating and going away for good.

Lucky for Oklahoma they don't need you to validate them. So, what are you guys going to do when Oklahoma gets the team. I can only hope that you have more in your lives than just negative internet comments that nobody cares about.

Perhaps OK will land the sonics but hopefully they don't. Regardless, They will always be remembered for when the sooners got served up the Statue of Liberty play by Boise State. An NBA franchise won't make the hurt go away!

I would just like to say that I was born and raised here in Oklahoma. I have been to many other states and would NEVER sit back and talk crap about someones home! There is NOTHING wrong with Oklahoma, we are proud of our state. I noticed that most of the ones running their mouth about us is from Texas, what is so great and wonderful about Texas?? I have been there many times and it is not any different than Oklahoma other than a bunch of rednecks and back woods people. As for you others, I am sure that there is ALOT that can be said about your state and it wouldn't be pretty! So, it is like the old saying, before you go pointing your finger, you better look in the mirror!! I am sure that many of you have never even been here, your just running your mouth thinking that you are being cute. But guess what, your NOT!!! PROUD OF OUR STATE AND LOVIN IT!!!!!

18K for a Hornets game were the result of two things: ONE, Virgin OKC NBA Fans and TWO the Bennett Group and local OKC companies making sure EVERY seat was bought for! That is not meant as a shot against OKC as I attended many Sonic games in the early 70's when Seattle had VIRGIN NBA fans. If you wish to compare apples to apples, then let me know how many seats are sold for the OKC NBA team in 40 years as the Sonics blessed Seattle in 1967. Look forward to hearing from you around 2047? I hope that I make it to the fabulous age of 89!
marinerintexas3/25/2008 22:10:00 PM(Report inappropriate content)
Oklahoma will struggle to fill the seats after the third or fourth year. The NBA will soon realize they ****ed up. Last thing, take the Mariners, and Ty Willingham with you. We need to rebuild!

Really OKC can't support an NBA team ?? Hmm we pack 84k into a football stadium, when the Hornets were here we averaged 18,000 in attendance, when they were in OKC they ranked 7th in attendance. Meanwhile in Seattle you averaged 24th out of 30 teams. I'm sure you guys are way more sophisticated they we will ever be, however having an NBA franchise is about money. We are willing to spend ours on the NBA, you are not.

Not sure the companies that Bennett and his group is involved with....but how about not enjoying a cup of Starbucks? H.Schultz made a HUGE profit selling the Sonics to the Bennett group.

I*f anybody can list all of the ownership group wjo sold the Sonics to the criminal Clay Bennett can you list them so we can boycot the businesses and maybe make it citywide. I also want to add that David Stern has been lying about Seattle not wanting to help finance a stadium or new arena. We have an ownership group led by Paul Allen who has a 300 million dollar plan. Also, Clay Bennett told Seattle if you don't pay 500 million for a new stadium and OK it by next month I am moving. He is a lier and a cheat and a very mean person and the city of Oklahoma should be outraged by his conduct as I assume you are respectable people still as shown during the bombing a few years ago. Also, he will hold you hostage at some point also. He will make money and screw you at the same time without you even knowing it. Mark my words. He is a greasy slimeball and time will prove it to you too.

Can OK support an NBA team? I'm from Nebraska and know that both here and OK are huge for college sports, but outside the Big 12, I don't think that basketball has much of a chance.
