The Best You Can Do?
(Oregonian)
You haven't heard much from the Portland these days, have you? They're taking it easy, keeping their meltdowns to a minimum, hoarding the medicated goo and staying out of the police blotter. And this is good? And this, this is all they have? The NBA's best collection of talent (you read that correctly, now refresh your page and read it again, because I can use the hits) is coasting along at 5-6 after taking care of the visiting Orlando on Thursday night. is playing solid basketball, Bonzi, DA and are wreaking havoc from the wings, and Vydas is starting to happen to me. And Mo Cheeks, coach Maurice Cheeks, he's keeping everything sane. Keeping them focused on their unending commitment to mediocrity and underachievement, and possibly keeping them out of the playoffs. Sure, the and may dive out of the playoff bracket before all is said and done (not the way they're playing, though), and the may dive in (you think?), but who wants to lay money on this Blazer team? Who wants to watch them? Who wants to think about them? Who else is pissed that they're pissing off the basketball gods by treating the game this way? By betraying their talent and going through the motions? Who else thinks this is a a Top 2 team that'll finish with a Top 20 record? Who else doesn't get why they don't get it? Money and ennui can't be the root of all these problems, but it's hard to find something else to pin it on. This team is playing like a squad on Ritalin, something to give the kids to get them to shut up and work at playing up to 60 percent of their potential. No, this team is giving Ritalin a bad name. You cannot root for this team. Anonymous Western Conference GM? "Bob Whitsitt is very close to realizing his goal. He wants to assemble two complete units that are both over the luxury tax." Including the impending luxury tax, owner Paul Allen will pay an estimated $157-million to watch his team play ball in 2002-03. Nugs Get a Leg Up
(Rocky Mountain News)
Yeah, that was lame. What's not important is the fact that boss Kiki Vandeweghe has hired martial arts expert Hugh Van Putten to tutor his kids on the fine art of, well, whatever. Forget that. This quote from the Rocky Mountain News is important: "Van Putten won't reveal when he was born, saying, 'I'm ageless.' But Van Putten does say he has been teaching his style since 'before' the 1960s and that he began giving lessons when he was 10." And this helps a second move? Or give a move to begin with? If Phil Jackson brings in the Ageless One, we nod our heads assent and let the man kick his way into our hearts. Kiki brings him in, and we get to laugh at pictures like this. Or this. Or, especially, this one. The Rev. Al Sharpton haircut was just the icing on the cake. And yes, to answer your question, Van Putten has instructed Billy Dee Williams. USA Basketball Fever, Catch It!
(New York Post)
According to Peter Vecsey, Larry Brown "is all but a living lock" to coach the 2003 USA Basketball team. This squad has to qualify for the 2004 Olympics in a Tournament of the Americas, a tourney that could feature , , , and TV's Tom Cavanaugh as starting point guard for the Canadian national team. ? He may or may not be a part of the team, he had a strong few games last summer in Indianapolis before putting his head down one too many times while dashing to the hoop. Did he learn anything from last year's debacle? "I learned not to go play USA basketball if George Karl is the coach." Yeah, I'd probably have to pass on representing my country if this were the case as well. That was not a joke. RUMINATIONS 17 and 13 in another strong game for Golden State's , who coulda been a Celtic, as continues to rack up the DNP-CDs. 16 points for AK-47 off the bench as the roll over the . Who the hell is and why is he on my TV? is still alive. (24) calls (22) "young," I take offense, and the are 9-1. San Antonio's shoots well, he doesn't do anything else well, and tonight he shot well. 28 points and a bad mustache in the win over the . The didn't lose focus after a rough start to this season, they downed the by a substantial margin on Wednesday, and they're starting to look scary again. If (1 of 8) is on the floor for defense for the , then why is he on the floor against the while (and his offense) is off the floor? Atlanta loses. -Pistons, really, who cares? THE DISTILLERY The signed guard , and Tito jokes are so lame at this point ... Marlon, however, is still fair game ... Bill Wennington is a mouthpiece, but a tall one ... You'd think they were tearing down Madison Square Garden, or something ... Somebody needs to tell that, even though she's gone and gotten married, Jennifer Lopez will still show him (and anyone else who asks) her bosoms at the slightest provocation ... Read his lips, no new Mavs ... Got to love early 90's political 'humor' ... The 's bigs are crap.
