Boozer out 2 months with broken hand

Chicago Bulls star Carlos Boozer will spend the next eight weeks on the sidelines after breaking a bone in his right hand when he tripped over a gym bag while running to answer the door in the dark at his house, the Chicago Daily Herald reported.

Athletes have been hurt in plenty of odd ways over the years. Check out the weirdest sports injuries.“I was at my house, came around a corner, fell over a bag, put my arm down to try to brace myself," Boozer, who will have surgery Tuesday, said at a press conference.
“It was just dark. My doorbell had rang and I tripped over a bag, tried to brace myself and it popped. I jumped back up, opened the door and my hand was still a little bit numb.
“It was a gym bag. It was a big bag ... I’m 265 [pounds], five percent body fat. I’m heavy, man. My weight just collapsed the bone right there.
"Unfortunately, my fifth metacarpal, on the pinky, broke into three pieces. I’ll get surgery on Tuesday, do my rehab and conditioning, be around the guys."
The 28-year-old, who signed a five-year, $80 million contract in the summer, said one positive was the timing of the injury, with still more than three weeks until the Bulls' season opener against Oklahoma City on Oct. 27.
“The good thing about this is it only happened in the preseason. Of course, I’ve got to be out a little while, but I’ll be able to stay in shape, be around the guys and continue to lead in that way. At least it happened right now and not later in the season," Boozer said.
“I feel bad about it, but we’ve got guys who will be able to step up and play. I’m going to be there supporting. I’ll be the biggest cheerleader and sideline coach and be busting my butt to try and get healthy, attacking my rehab to try and get right."
Boozer, a member of the U.S. team that won the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics, has averaged 17.2 points and 10.2 rebounds since being drafted out of Duke in 2002.
