Mavs grant Fisher's release request

The Dallas Mavericks have waived Derek Fisher, a move made at the request of the veteran guard.

The Mavericks announced the move Saturday, four days after the 38-year-old Fisher strained a tendon in his right knee in a game against Philadelphia.

"In Tuesday's game against Philadelphia, I suffered an injury to my patellar tendon," he said via a statement on Twitter. "The recovery time will be approximately two weeks. With this news and the difficulty I have been having being away from my family, I have asked the organization to waive me so I can return home.

"(Mavericks owner) Mark Cuban has been extremely supportive and has granted me this request. I cannot say enough good things about this organization. From Mark, to Coach (Rick) Carlisle, to the players on the Mavericks' team, I sincerely thank them for the opportunity.

"I have made decisions in the past, leaving money and opportunity on the table, and I will need to do that again. My family is my priority, and that is where I choose to be."

Fisher, a 16-year veteran who won five championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, was a free agent when he signed with Dallas three weeks ago because of injuries and lack of depth at the point.

ESPN.com reported Saturday that Fisher agreed to stay with the Mavericks until they could secure another point guard, which they did by calling up Chris Douglas-Roberts from the D-League's Texas Legends. Considered to be the top current NBA prospect in the D-League, he will join the Mavericks on Sunday in San Antonio.

In nine games with the Mavs this season, Fisher averaged 8.6 points, 3.6 assists and 1.7 rebounds.

Fisher ended his tweets by saying: "I won't close the possibility that I will play again, however, for now my family and being close to them remains the priority."
