Chandler Harnish, QB
- Height: 6-foot-2
- Weight: 221 pounds
- School: Northern Illinois
Perhaps no one should be more pleased with Tim Tebow's NFL success than Harnish, who put up similar numbers in four years at Northern Illinois to those produced by the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner. The Mid-American Conference's offensive player of the year after finishing fourth in the nation with 4,595 yards of total offense, Harnish as a senior became the fourth FBS player to pass for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 in the same season, joining Vince Young, Dan LeFevour and Colin Kaepernick. Harnish ran the 40-yard dash in 4.76 seconds at the NFL combine - four one-hundredths of a second behind Tebow's time in 2010 - and showed impressive athleticism in both the three-cone drill and 20-yard shuttle. He throws better on the run than in the pocket - another trait he shares with Tebow - and has the arm strength, if not always the accuracy, to make most of the throws necessary to succeed in the NFL. But while Tebow's skills as a ball carrier have translated to the next level, Harnish - who's nearly 30 pounds lighter - likely won't be taking off on any designed runs on Sundays. His accuracy also dropped off from 64.7 percent to 61.7 as a senior, a troubling sign even though he only was intercepted on 2.3 percent of his throws throughout four years. Like many spread quarterbacks, Harnish didn't take many snaps from under center and wasn't asked to make many NFL-caliber throws. An outstanding leader and field general, Harnish has given scouts a lot to like, particularly with versatile passers such as Tebow and Cam Newton enjoying recent success. But the question marks about his ability to translate to the next level will likely drop him to the fifth or sixth round.
