Barkevious Mingo, DE
- Height: 6-foot-5
- Weight: 240 pounds
- School: LSU
Mingo is a likely top-10 selection after using a stellar NFL combine to enhance his reputation. He opted to forego his senior season at LSU after helping anchor a 2012 defense that ranked eighth-best in the FBS, allowing 309.2 yards per game. He started 10 of 13 games as a junior, earning second-team All-SEC honors and finishing with 8.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. Those numbers were down after he had 8.0 sacks and 15.0 tackles for loss as a sophomore in mostly a reserve role. Known by his nickname KeKe (pronounced Key-Key), Mingo solidified his draft status at the combine. Among defensive linemen, his 4.58 40-yard dash time ranked second and his 37-inch vertical leap tied for second. Mingo turned in a broad jump of 128 inches and showcased his agility with a time of 6.84 seconds in the 3-cone drill, cementing his status as a freakish athlete. Physicality is not his forte since he is under 250 pounds, making an NFL future up front unlikely. Mingo said at the combine that he has put on 15 pounds since the end of LSU's season. Some NFL observers believe he is an ideal fit as a pass rusher outside in a 3-4 scheme in the same vein as Cowboys star DeMarcus Ware. Mingo must learn to stay disciplined against the run, particularly with the proliferation of read-option schemes in the NFL these days. There's a big upside for Mingo, who did not play football until he was a junior in high school. One of the most-asked questions about him is his first name - Barkevious was derived when his mother combined her name, Barbara, with his father's, Kevious.
