Tavon Austin, WR
- Height: 5-foot-9
- Weight: 171 pounds
- School: West Virginia
Austin isn't built like Calvin Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald, but he makes up for that lack of size with breakaway speed, a good understanding of route running and plenty of confidence. The self-proclaimed "best player available in this draft" said he patterns his game after the Denver Broncos' Wes Welker. He's a likely mid- to late first-round pick after an impressive combine performance, tying for the second fastest 40-yard dash (4.34) behind Texas' Marquise Goodman (4.27), and 20-yard shuttle performance (4.01 seconds). Austin can run by most defenders, but he's skilled at following blockers and letting them pave the way. Converted from running back to wide receiver as a freshman, Austin played 13 games in each of his four seasons in Morgantown. The Baltimore native finished with 286 catches for 3,404 yards and 29 TDs, along with 1,040 rushing yards and six scores. Likely a slot receiver on Sundays, Austin could also be a dangerous return weapon. He posted a 12.7 punt return average on 34 collegiate attempts and a 24.8 kickoff return average - and four TDs - on 97 attempts. Austin, a first-team All-Big 12 pick and the league's co-special teams players of the year, was second in the FBS in all-purpose yards (223.85) as a senior after leading the nation as a junior with 198.0 Austin was named the 2012 Paul Hornung Award winner, given to the most versatile player in college football, and the Jet Return Specialist Award, presented to the best return specialist in the nation.
