Bjoern Werner, DE

Scouting Report

Hailing from Germany, Werner has played just five years of competitive football in the United States but appears poised to become a first-round draft pick. The Berlin native was among the nation's leaders with 13 sacks and recorded 18 tackles for loss in 2012 while earning ACC defensive player of the year honors. He was also a unanimous All-American and finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given to the nation's best defensive player. Werner compiled 23 1/2 sacks in his three seasons at Florida State, and only former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Peter Boulware had more over that same span at the school with 34. Werner finished tied for fourth on the school's all-time sacks list and ninth in tackles for loss with 35 after deciding to forgo his senior season Jan. 3. He showed adequate speed for a defensive end at the NFL combine, running 4.83 seconds in the 40, and was among the top 10 performers in the 20-yard shuttle (4.40 seconds). Werner, however, might need to bulk up a little before getting to the NFL. He benched 225 pounds 25 times in Indianapolis while fellow defensive end prospect Margus Hunt - another European - tied for the lead with 38 reps. Before his sophomore year in high school, Werner came to the Salisbury School in Connecticut as an exchange student but returned to Germany for his junior year. He came back to America to play for Salisbury again as a senior. Werner married his wife, Denise, during spring break in 2010.
