Sylvester Williams, DT

Scouting Report

One of the best human-interest stories in the draft, Williams took a highly unlikely route to reach this point. He played only one season of high school football in Missouri due to academic problems. After graduating, he originally did not pursue football further, instead working for a company making truck radiator parts for nearly a year before rediscovering his desire to play. Williams then attended Coffeyville Community College in Kansas as a walk-on in 2010, making an immediate impact with 52 tackles, including 12 1/2 for losses, two sacks and five blocked kicks. A highly sought JUCO prospect, Williams continued to North Carolina and was a two-year starter for the Tar Heels, earning first-team all-ACC honors after finishing with 42 tackles - 13 1/2 for losses - and six sacks in 2012. While Williams did not put up any eye-popping numbers at the scouting combine, teams have been impressed by his agility and quickness off the snap as well as his ability to anchor against offensive linemen. Working in two different schemes with North Carolina showed his versatility at playing different gaps, but Williams is definitely more suited to be a tackle in a 4-3 front over being a nose tackle in a 3-4 alignment. The positive of those schemes is that it showed off his quickness, but at the NFL level, Williams will have to become a more powerful player and push linemen back. He's still raw and there may be some concern about drafting a 24-year-old defensive lineman. Still, Williams is one of the top 10 players at the defensive tackle position and is likely shaping up to be a third-round selection.
