Tweets from sports figures have been hilarious, offensive or inspiring — and then some — this year. Here are our favorites from 2012.

After Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson turned in an underwhelming performance against the defending national champion Alabama Crimson Tide in the season opener, Robinson heard lots of criticism . . . from players at in-state rival Michigan State. Michigan State’s players didn’t hold back which only adds fuel to the fire in anticipation of their Oct. 20 matchup.

A little Twitter feud started up between former LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu and Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron after LSU’s defeat at the hands of the Crimson Tide in the national championship. Since that time, however, Mathieu has been dismissed by the LSU football program — so a college rematch, at least, won't happen for these two.

Green Bay Packers guard TJ Lang displayed the most displeasure with the replacement officials following the Packers' infamous Monday night loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Teammate Tom Crabtree took a less explicit route, but Crabtree still found a way to jab the replacement refs. Crabtree and Lang were not the only NFL players to weigh in on the situation. Many current and former NFL players took to Twitter to criticize the refs, and not surprisingly, the real refs were back the next week.

Perhaps Jonathan Vilma should have avoided the social media spotlight in light of the NFL’s investigation of the New Orleans Saints. Although, judging from Vilma’s answer to a Twitter follower . . . maybe not.

Way to stick up for your teammates. Steelers safety Ryan Clark lent Twitter support to teammate Hines Ward following Rice's initial tweet and found himself in a Twitter feud of his own. Leave the beef off Twitter, everyone.

Why talk to a coach personally when you can take your spat public over Twitter? Former Bengal Chad Ochocinco took the opportunity to air his dirty laundry with then-coach Marvin Lewis. Clearly the two couldn't work out their differences . . . the flamboyant receiver moved on and played with the Patriots the following year. His oversharing was pretty over the top during the lockout, and it was about to hit a new high with his reality show — before it got canceled.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall took to Twitter to react to the news of the death of Osama bin Laden. His controversial tweets eventually led to one sponsor dropping him.

Perhaps Gronk should warn his friends about posting shirtless pictures of him on Twitter in the future.

Denard Robinson learned the hard way that he should get a better Twitter password after his ex-girlfriend broke into his account and posted some less-than-flattering tweets about the Michigan QB. Hey Denard, we suggest your don't change your password to "password."

No one knows better than mom, which is probably why Clipper DeAndre Jordan's mother thought it was fine to complain about her son's team on Twitter. It probably didn't help that the Clippers lost the game against the Oklahoma City Thunder that Mrs. Jordan felt the need to comment on. Maybe mother does know best.

There was a war of Twitter words on the day that the NFL handed down its harsh penalty for the New Orleans Saints' Bountygate scandal. Former NFL player Warren Sapp took to Twitter to say he knew who snitched on the team and confirmed to a follower that it was Jeremey Shockey. That seemed to be news to Shockey, who came back at Sapp with his response to the allegations. We're definitely not going to get in the middle of this argument between these two big men.

We think it's nice that New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez is trying to fix his relationship with wide receiver Santonio Holmes. We're just not sure if taking to Twitter to find a Valentine's Day date is the best way to do that. Hope Santonio at least liked the cookies!

Athletes don't get the same treatment the rest of us do, and that includes treatment for aches and pains. On a day off in Dallas, several members of the Timberwolves underwent cryotherapy treatment, which has similar effects to taking an ice bath. And of course, the photos from the treatment look pretty cool with the big men's head floating above a sea of cooling mist. Thanks for the photo, guys!

There's no better way to motivate a Super Bowl-bound team like gifts. In honor of the New England Patriots' trip to big show, Chad Ochocinco gave each of his teammates a pair of brand new, high-end headphones. And they thanked him in a very modern way — by posting pictures of the gifts on Twitter. This particular one came courtesy of offensive lineman Nick McDonald's account.

Chad Ochocinco decided to weigh in during President Obama's State of the Union address to express his concern about Speaker John Boehner's demeanor. Boehner, who is a representative from Ohio, was nice enough to answer the former Cincinnati Bengal, tweeting, "Thanks & good luck in the @SuperBowl; we'll see you in the playoffs next year. Go #Bengals #WhoDey"

San Francisco 49er Patrick Willis took to Twitter to show his support for teammate Kyle Williams after the wide receiver's two fumbles helped push the team out of the playoffs. Willis' defense came on the heels of nasty tweets sent to Williams from incensed fans after the loss.

When actor Rob Lower tweeted this to followers, it actually made fans sit up and notice. Sure, he's just an actor, but it should be noted that the first person Colts owner Jim Irsay followed when he started his Twitter account was, in fact, Rob Lowe. So could the actor actually have an inside scoop on the Colts' quarterback situation?

Yes, that really was Chad Ochocinco inviting one of his followers to a playoff game — and he followed through with it! Mayor Michael B. Hancock of Denver tweeted this photo to make sure his followers knew that Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl paid up on the bet he lost to his Colorado counterpart. The Pittsburgh mayor Tebowed in a local park while wearing a Tebow jersey after the Steelers lost to the Broncos in the playoffs.

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Jack Johnson celebrated his goal against the Washington Capitals by taking a knee and "Tebowing" on the ice. Johnson said the inspiration for the move came from his friends. "I was watching the Broncos game with some buddies . . . they said that if you score, you have to 'Tebow'. I said, 'You're on!'" Detroit Lions cornerback Aaron Berry took some heat about posting a tweet to someone that he later deleted. Some readers assumed he was responding to Lions fan who attacked him on the social media. But while he did deny that's who he was referring to in his first tweet, he never really clarified who exactly he expected would go back to "being Broke & Miserable."

Urban Meyer's alleged Twitter ban at Ohio State turned out to be more of an urban legend and Ohio State player Reid Fragel wasn't the only one confused in Columbus. Original reports suggested the coach had banned his Buckeyes from Twitter, but it turned out the media — and even Meyer's own players — got this one wrong. At least Fragel was nice enough to clarify.
