Fellow backup quarterbacks Kyle Boller of the Raiders and Charlie Whitehurst of the Seahawks may have seen their last action in a while as the preseason came to an end with a Seattle victory over Oakland, 20-3.

Seahawks running back Vai Taua rushes the ball through the teeth of the Oakland defense Friday night. The rookie out of Nevada ran seven times for 31 yards and a touchdown in his bid to make the team as an undrafted free agent.

Seattle's backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst audibles at the line in the Seahawks' impressive showing against the Raiders in both team's final preseason game. Whitehurst continued to impress with a 9 for 15 passing performance that accounted for 140 yards.

The final week of the preseason is often the last chance for backups to shine for their coaches. Such was the case Thursday night, as the Eagles' Vince Young threw for 193 yards and a score in the Eagles' 24-14 victory over the host New York Jets.

Unfortunately, the biggest news to come out of the final week of the preseason is often which teams suffered injuries to key players in a meaningless game. This week's loser is Young, who ended his night early when injuring his hamstring on a rollout. He later limped around on the sidelines, laughing with starting QB Michael Vick.

Was undoubtedly Cam Newton. The first pick of the 2011 NFL Draft did not see a lot of action in Thursday's 33-17 loss at home to Pittsburgh, but after the game Newton was declared Carolina's regular-season opening-day starter by first-year head coach Ron Rivera.

Before getting the starting nod, Newton celebrated with Jonathan Stewart (No. 28) and Jeremy Shockey after he hit Shockey for a TD — Newton's first scoring pass in a Panthers uniform.

Although he did not bring in the ball, Atlanta Falcons receiver Kerry Meier, who has never caught a pass in the regular season, had two grabs for 19 yards in the Falcons' 21-7 loss at home to Baltimore.

Though return man / defensive back Justin Rogers does his best to avoid a tackle, Detroit linebacker Caleb Campbell (No. 53) and his Lions picked up the victory Thursday, 16-6 at Buffalo, to cap a perfect 4-0 preseason. Campbell had three tackles in the game.

Another team to finish the preseason unbeaten is Sam Bradford's St. Louis Rams. The second-year QB threw for 133 yards and a TD in a 24-17 victory at Jacksonville, hitting rookie TE Lance Kendricks on a 44-yard score.

With starting running back Cedric Benson in jail, the Bengals turned to Brian Leonard on Thursday, and he produced 57 yards on 11 carries in a 17-13 loss to the Colts at home.

If injured Peyton Manning gets his way, then indeed Thursday at Cincinnati was his final day on the Indianapolis sideline without a jersey on. Manning continues to recover from offseason neck surgery.

Kerry Collins, brought out of retirement to replace Manning, completed 5 of 10 passes for 45 yards in what Colts' fans hope will be his final on-field action for a long time.

The beauty of preseason. Tracy Porter intercepted Peyton Manning and ran it back for a TD to clinch a Saints' Super Bowl victory. Tennessee running back Kestahn Moore has never had a carry in an NFL regular-season game. On Thursday, the two hooked up on Moore's 4-yard run. The Titans rolled on the road, 32-9.

Washington safety DeJon Gomes bats down a pass by Tampa Bay quarterback Jonathan Crompton at FedEx Field. The host Redskins won the game, 29-24, to end the preseason at 3-1.

New York Giants running back Andre Brown had 21 carries against host New England on Thursday. He did not find the end zone but did provide 68 yards in the Giants' 18-17 victory that put both teams at 2-2 in the preseason.

New England Patriots receiver Chad Ochocinco just misses a pass from quarterback Tom Brady in the first quarter against the Giants on Thursday. Ochocinco hauled in one grab for nine yards in the game.

Jacksonville quarterback David Garrard gets hit on the elbow after releasing the ball by St. Louis defensive end Chris Long. Long did sack Garrard on the game's opening drive, while Garrard completed only one pass in two series.

Chicago receiver Johnny Knox catches a TD pass for a touchdown over Cleveland defensive backs DeAngelo Smith (No. 25) and Buster Skrine. The Bears won 24-14 at home with Robert Hughes rushing for two short scores.

Minnesota quarterback Christian Ponder, in his final game before his regular-season professional debut, rushes for 14 yards against Houston. The Vikings shut the Texans out at home, 28-0. Ponder actually ran for 61 yards on eight carries (while throwing for 83 yards and a score).

Denver Broncos cornerback Syd'Quan Thompson is tackled by two members of the Arizona Cardinals defense during a punt return in the first quarter at University of Phoenix Stadium, but not before gaining 29 yards. The Cards rolled, 26-7.

San Francisco 49ers running back Kendall Hunter finished his solid preseason with 57 yards on 11 carries at San Diego on Thursday. Fellow rusher Anthony Dixon got the glory, however, with 1-yard TD runs on each of the 49ers' first two drives in the 20-17 victory.
