This year, Shaq has taken it one step further by challenging FOXSports.com columnist Jason Whitlock to a boxing match. Way to stay in the game, Shaq.

Hope Solo is known to speak her mind. During and after the 2012 London Olympic Games — where she and her team won a gold medal — she managed to alienate people with her outspoken ways. In late July, the star goalkeeper took to Twitter to criticize former soccer player Brandi Chastain on her commentary. More recently, Solo has been in the media spotlight as a result of her tumultuous relationship with new husband Jerramy Stevens.

Live … strong? Lance Armstrong was a hero, a fighter, an icon. He beat cancer and amazed us by winning Tour de France title after Tour de France title. Now, he’ll go down as one of the biggest fakes in all of sports. The seven-time Tour champ was stripped of all of his Tour titles after a USADA report labeled him a serial drug cheat. He even lost his endorsement deal with Nike … and Nike doesn’t drop anyone (Tiger Woods still has his deal, and they even brought Michael Vick back on).

Kyle Williams played a significant role in the San Francisco 49ers 2012 NFC Championship game loss to the New York Giants. Williams had two fumbles late in the game that really cost his team and quickly became a scapegoat among 49ers fans on Twitter. Williams received support from some teammates like Patrick Willis on the heels of nasty tweets sent to Williams from incensed fans after the loss.

McKayla Maroney made the ultimate stink-face at the Olympics this summer. After receiving her silver medal in her best event, the vault, Maroney’s face was photographed and spawned the “McKayla is not impressed” meme — which has taken the pop-culture world by storm.

Eating a large stack of pancakes has many side effects besides an expanding waistline. Los Angeles Kings forward Dustin Penner changed the game back in January when he discovered that enthusiastic over-consumption of pancakes can lead to back spasms. He was forced to sit out a game to recover, and earned the nickname "Pancakes." Luckily for him, the joke ended with him winning his second Stanley Cup.

There are few trophies in college football that are revered as much as the crystal trophy given to the winner of the BCS National Championship. Unfortunately for the University of Alabama, their $30,000 trophy was knocked off its pedestal and destroyed by a player’s father.

The former San Francisco Giants star was slapped with a 50-game suspension on Aug. 15, after testing positive for testosterone. After he was banned, Cabrera, 28, said in a statement, “My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used.” But when Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com asked him about rumors of a positive test just a few weeks prior, Cabrera angrily denied it. On Aug. 19, the Daily News reported that Cabrera, through an associate named Juan Nunez, created a fictitious website selling a bogus cream, in an attempt to establish that the outfielder had purchased a topical cream online and inadvertently used it. MLB investigators saw through the ruse.

Following an on-track incident between NASCAR drivers Clint Bowyer and Jeff Gordon, both crews decided to settle the incident off the track. The crews for both drivers found themselves embroiled in a nasty brawl that stole headlines at the Sprint Cup Chase race in Phoenix. NASCAR handed down punishment to both Gordon and Bowyer’s teams but that doesn’t erase the images that have circulated in the sports world.

Everybody needs to blow off some steam when things aren’t going your way. Amar’e decided to blow off steam following a Knicks playoff loss by taking on a fire extinguisher. Stoudemire did enough damage to require stitches and the Knicks forward missed Games 3 and 4 against the rival Miami Heat in the first round of the playoffs.

Some reality television fans had doubts when Evelyn Lozada and Chad Johnson announced their engagement. The two filmed a VH1 reality series chronicling the lead-up to their July 4 nuptials. Not all marriages are winners, as Chad and Evelyn proved, divorcing after just 2 1/2 months.

It's every NFL official's goal — regular or replacement — to get through a game without becoming part of the story. Through three weeks of the season, however, the replacements made more and more headlines as their on-field performances seemed to be regressing rather than improving. Clashes with coaches, embarrassing moments, confusion about rules and botched judgment calls led to the speedy reinstatement of the regular refs in Week 4.

The advent of social media has given fans incredible access to their favorite athletes. Unfortunately, social media also opens the door for athletes to stick their feet in their mouths. Enter Marcus Jordan — the son of NBA legend Michael Jordan. Jordan tweeted a suggestive message to a porn star whose Twitter handle is xxxrachelroxxx. Maybe next time Jordan should consider using Twitter’s Direct Message function.

It is fair to say that Gisele Bundchen is not the most gracious of losers. Following the New England Patriots’ loss in Super Bowl XLVI, Bundchen seemingly took the loss harder than her husband, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. The supermodel didn’t take kindly to the ribbing she received from some elated New York Giants fans. Bundchen fired back: “My husband cannot f***ing throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time!” Point taken, Gisele.

Next time Bears QB Jay Cutler takes on the task of leading the Cubs crowd in "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," he might want to print out the lyrics to follow along. Back in July, Cutler led the crowd during the seventh-inning stretch. Unfortunately, the crowd seemed to know the song better than Cutler.

Former University of Arizona player Nic Wise sent a text message to a woman and got a response from the woman’s boyfriend. The shocking part of the story is that the boyfriend was none other than Joakim Noah of the Chicago Bulls. Judging from Noah’s response, he wasn’t aware that Wise and his girlfriend were acquainted. Smells like trouble …

The chain of events that led to Petrino’s firing began when the coach crashed his motorcycle on April 1. Eventually it was reported that Petrino was involved in an affair with another employee in the athletic department. Petrino was fired from his position as the football coach at Arkansas on April 10th.

First-base umpire Tim Welke made a horrendous call in the Dodgers-Rockies game. With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, the Dodgers’ Jerry Hairston Jr. hit a chopper in between shortstop and third and Rockies third baseman Chris Nelson made a diving stop and threw the ball to Todd Helton at first. Helton was at least a foot and a half off of the bag but Welke called Hairston out, to the displeasure of Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. Even Helton knew it was a bad call. "Neighborhood?" the Rockies' first baseman asked. "It wasn't in the same area code."

The Ravens really hoped to make a statement against the New England Patriots in their 2012 AFC Championship matchup and seize the opportunity to advance to the Super Bowl. The Ravens felt confident with kicker Billy Cundiff. Cundiff had been almost automatic from close-range all season. Despite the odds, Cundiff missed a potential game-tying 32-yard field goal with 15 seconds left in regulation.

Stephen A. Smith is known for creating controversy and buzz with his strong opinions. Smith might have gone a step too far on an Oct. 25 television appearance. The blogosphere erupted when many believed Smith used a derogatory expletive in response to another panelist’s claim that Lakers star Kobe Bryant would miss significant time with injury. Smith has vehemently denied his use of the phrase.

During the current NHL lockout, Commissioner Gary Bettman hasn’t exactly received rave reviews. With the lockout dragging on and fans clamoring for their hockey, it is unlikely that the public sentiment will turn around anytime soon. Needless to say, this is not good given that this is the second work stoppage in seven years for the NHL. Yikes!

Who knew badminton would become such a hot topic at the Olympics? But a good, juicy scandal is always fodder for conversation. Eight badminton players — two doubles teams from South Korea and one each from Indonesia and China, the latter team including the reigning world champion — were expelled from the 2012 Olympics after tanking qualifying matches to try to get a preferable seed. Fans in attendance started booing and the rest is history.

Greece's Voula Papachristou was removed from the Olympic team over comments she made on Twitter making racist comments about African immigrants and expressing support for a far-right party. A statement by the Hellenic Olympic Committee read: “The track and field athlete Paraskevi (Voula) Papachristou is placed outside the Olympic Team for statements contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic movement.”

Williams earned his spot on this list because he’s the man caught in the middle of the biggest scandal to rock the NFL in years. In March of this year, the NFL concluded an almost two-year investigation that found Williams – the Saints' defensive coordinator at the time – promoted a bounty program that violated NFL rules. The fallout from the scandal saw head coach Sean Payton suspended for the year, general manager Mickey Loomis suspended for eight games, a fine of $500,000 for the Saints organization and many player suspensions.
