News: Hicks will start out at defensive end in the Saints' new 3-4 defensive alignment under new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. [+]
Impact: Hicks was tentatively slated to start at nose tackle, but with the Saints drafting massive DT John Jenkins in the third round, the team shifted gears. While Hicks will still likely see playing time at all three defensive line positions, he holds slightly more value if he can lock down the starting position at defensive end, as it should provide an increased opportunity to rack up a few more sacks. News: Wilson will compete with Victor Butler for a starting position at strong side outside linebacker in the Saints' new 3-4 defensive alignment under new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. [+]
Impact: The Saints' switch to a 3-4 defense fits Wilson's skill set perfectly, as he has the prototypical size and speed to play outside linebacker in such a scheme. While Butler likely has the inside edge for the starting position after playing under Ryan the previous two seasons in Dallas, Wilson's ability to rush the passer should net him plenty of playing time, particularly in passing downs. News: Smith will begin offseason training activities at outside linebacker, according to general manager Mickey Loomis, Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. The Saints will be switching to a 3-4 defense in 2013 under new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. [+]
Impact: For years, Smith made up for being only a mediocre pass rusher by posting solid tackle numbers at the defensive end position, and many speculated that a move to outside linebacker would make sense in the team's new 3-4 alignment. Loomis' comments seem to confirm that speculation. Smith has lacked burst for a few years now, as he enters his 10th year in the league, but the position switch makes him an intriguing IDP option. News: While Brown is healthy after a season-ending ankle injury last year, he enters training camp behind Vick Ballard on the depth chart, ESPN reports. "At this point, yeah, [Ballard's] sitting there as the lead guy. But Donnie's in great shape and healthy and looks fantastic to this point in the offseason program," head coach Chuck Pagano said. [+]
Impact: Brown played just 10 games last season as he missed time after surgery to repair torn cartilage in his knee and then had a season-ending ankle injury. It's good to hear he's healthy, but his struggles to establish himself as an every-down back the past three seasons may mean he's set for a more limited third-down or change-of-pace role this season. ( RotoWire - Wed. May 15, 2013) |
News: Head coach Chuck Pagano says Ballard enters training camp as Indy's top running back. "It's always nice to have a couple guys, a change of pace guy," Pagano told ESPN. "But certainly at the end of the year with Donnie [Donald Brown] hurt and the way Vick came on and the way he was running, he was getting the lion's share of the snaps. At this point, yeah, he's sitting there as the lead guy. But Donnie's in great shape and healthy and looks fantastic to this point in the offseason program." [+]
Impact: Ballard started the last 12 games last season after Brown missed time with knee and ankle injuries. It looks like Ballard will be the starter, with Brown as the change-of-pace and/or third-down back. The backfield picture could change and Delone Carter could also figure into the mix as a short-yardage specialist, but Pagano's comments seem to indicate Ballard will get the bulk of carries. ( RotoWire - Wed. May 15, 2013) |
News: Chapman will be working as the starting nose tackle during the Colts' upcoming mini-camp, the Indianapolis Star reports. [+]
Impact: He'll compete with Brandon McKinney, Aubrayo Franklin, Martin Tevaseu and rookie Montori Hughes for the job, but it looks like his to take after missing last season while coming back from a torn ACL. He has upside as a premium run-stuffer if he's back to full speed. ( RotoWire - Tue. May 14, 2013) | |
