News: Johnson, who has been been forced to miss several offseason practices due to a back ailment, was able to participate in individual drills Tuesday, the Associated Press reports. [+]
Impact: The gabby wideout is calling the injury a strain, but also referred to 6-8 week recovery period. Nonetheless, Tuesday's effort sounds like a great sign that Johnson will be closer to 100 percent come training camp. This takes on a bit of importance even though he's a veteran, as he'll be with a new quarterback and a new offense this season, one that might have him lining up in the slot at times. ( RotoWire - Tue. May 21, 2013) |
News: Johnson resumed practicing for the first time since hurting his back during the team's first spring minicamp session last month. [+]
Impact: Johnson says he was limited to practicing individual drills on Tuesday, during a session closed to media not employed by the team. Calling the injury a "strain," Johnson says he felt some soreness. He says he is ahead of the initial prognosis of needing six to eight weeks to recover. The session marked the first time Johnson has worked in a practice setting with Buffalo's new quarterbacks: veteran free-agent addition Kevin Kolb, and rookie first-round pick EJ Manuel. News: Williams denies ever contemplating suicide, and says private comments he made in text messages are being taken out of context by his ex-fiancee in a lawsuit over the possession of a $785,000 diamond engagement ring. Calling himself "completely fine," Williams says he was "venting" his feelings to someone he thought he trusted. [+]
Impact: Williams spoke after practice Monday, in his first chance to respond since Erin Marzouki's attorney released a series of texts the two exchanged in November. The texts portray Williams as being despondent over their breakup. In one text, Williams writes: "No money in the world should leave me with suicidal thoughts." Williams says he wrote that out of anger. He adds the decision to release the texts reveal Marzouki's true character. ( STATS - Mon. May 20, 2013)

News: In addition to the usual quarterback drills, Daniels was seen taking hand-offs with the running backs and fielding punts and kickoffs on special teams during mini-camp, according to 49ers.com. [+]
Impact: As was reported when he was first drafted, Daniels is being viewed as a multi-position option due to his speed and versatility. With the loss of Ted Ginn, the team is looking for more help in the return game and Daniels could ultimately lock himself into a roster spot ahead of Scott Tolzien, should he thrive in this situation. ( RotoWire - May 12, 2013) |
News: Patton impressed the 49ers coaching staff with great speed and swift hands as both a receiver and punt returner during Friday's minicamp practice, according to the San Jose Mercury News. [+]
Impact: Patton has already impressed coach Jim Harbaugh with his attitude and eagerness to learn, so strong play at practice obviously continues to boost his stock. With the departure of Ted Ginn and with Kyle Williams still on the mend from knee surgery, Patton has a very strong chance to gain extra time on the field as a return man. Though it's always difficult for a rookie to make a strong impact in the NFL, the wide receiver out of Louisiana Tech is quickly developing into a nice, little sleeper pick this season. ( RotoWire - Sat. May 11, 2013) |
News: McDonald has apparently stood out as a pass catcher during minicamp and has also impressed as a long-snapper on field goal attempts, the Sacramento Bee reports. [+]
Impact: McDonald was actually criticized for the number of drops in college, but the 49ers had faith in him to curb that issue and work as a backup to Vernon Davis. He won't really make much of a fantasy impact to start, but should Davis get blanketed in coverage again this season, McDonald may see some work come his way if he wins the job. ( RotoWire - Sat. May 11, 2013)
