News: Williams has restructured his contract with the Panthers, ESPN.com reports. [+]
Impact: Players tweak their deals fairly often, but in the case of Williams, it is notable since there had been whispers that his previous contract could lead to the Panthers potentially dangling him in trade talks. His restructuring frees up $3.2 million in salary cap space this year, while also lowering his future cap hits. In any case, the move ensures that Williams will stick around in Carolina to share the team's backfield with Jonathan Stewart and fullback Mike Tolbert. ( RotoWire - Wed. May 15, 2013) |
News: A person familiar with the situation says the Panthers have restructured Williams' contract, a move that will ensure Carolina's all-time leading rusher will be back this season. [+]
Impact: The person spoke to The Associated Press Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the move has not been publically announced. Yahoo.com first reported the new deal Tuesday. The new contract saves Carolina $3.2 million under the NFL salary cap in both 2013 and 2014, and $3.867 million in 2015. Two years were added on to the deal, but it's designed to expire after the 2015 season. ( STATS - Wed. May 15, 2013) |
News: Beason (knee) expects to have a big impact on the Panthers' defense this season, the Charlotte Observer reports. [+]
Impact: Beason, who has missed all but five games over the past two seasons, appears to have recovered from knee and shoulder complications that ruled him out last season. The former Pro-Bowler will move to outside linebacker this season, with reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year Luke Kuechly starting in the middle. The duo figures to benefit from having rookie defensive tackles Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short up front, so Beason could be in store for a bounce-back season if he can remain healthy. News: The Kansas City Chiefs have signed former Kansas defensive end Toben Opurum as an undrafted free agent after trying him out as a fullback during rookie minicamp. The Chiefs announced the move in a statement Friday. [+]
Impact: The 6-foot-1, 250-pound Opurum began his career with the Jayhawks as a running back, gaining 554 yards and scoring nine touchdowns during the 2009 season. He moved to linebacker as a sophomore and played defensive end the past two seasons, making 109 tackles and 6 1/2 sacks in his career. ( STATS - Fri. May 17, 2013) |
News: It hasn't taken long for Alex Smith to become the leader of the Kansas City Chiefs. The former No. 1 draft pick was sent from the San Francisco 49ers to the Chiefs during a topsy-turvy offseason. If he wasn't considered the leader in the huddle then, he certainly is now, as the Chiefs toil away in blazing heat during the first full week of voluntary practices. [+]
Impact: Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe compared his QB on Wednesday to Steve Young, and praised the way that Smith has helped the Chiefs pick up new coach Andy Reid's offense. Smith could be poised for a solid debut season in KC. ( STATS - Wed. May 15, 2013) |
News: Draughn has been sidelined during OTAs with a sports hernia, the Kansas City Star reports. [+]
Impact: Draughn performed some good work as backup to Jamaal Charles last season, racking up 233 yards on a decent 3.9 YPC. He'll likely need to prove he's fully healthy by the time training camp rolls around if he plans on staving off rookie Knile Davis for the top backup role in 2013. ( RotoWire - Wed. May 15, 2013) | |
