News: Due $2.95 million in 2010, Nathan Vasher will most likely be released, according to the Chicago Tribune. [+]
Impact: He finished up 2009 as barely a part-time contributor, and just isn't worth the money anymore. Perhaps a change of scenery will do him well, but for the moment, he won't be worth a look in IDP leagues next season. ( Fanball - Tue. Feb 9, 2010) |
News: Hillenmeyer is among more than a dozen NFL players who have pledged to donate their brain and spinal cord tissue for concussion research. [+]
Impact: In December, the NFL and its players association said they would support the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University School of Medicine's research and encouraged players to participate. The NFL said it was willing to give $1 million or more to the center. ( STATS - Mon. Feb 1, 2010) |
News: Forte underwent arthroscopic left knee surgery within the last two weeks, ESPN reports. [+]
Impact: This is more of a clean-up procedure and Forte should be fine by the time the summer rolls around. It could also explain his big drop-off this year, as he sprained his left knee in Week 3 and seemed to struggle for much of the season, finishing with just 929 rushing yards. Perhaps a healthier Forte will be like the 2008 Forte, though it remains to be seen if there's room enough for Forte and Jay Cutler to both be their productive selves while sharing a backfield. News: Smith signed a futures contract with the 49ers on Thursday, Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports. [+]
Impact: Smith will provide competition in the secondary heading into training camp. ( RotoWire - Thu. Feb 4, 2010) |
News: The 49ers are in discussion with Brooks regarding a multi-year contract extension, the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reports. [+]
Impact: Without a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, Brooks will be a restricted free agent in March, eligible for a one-year tender if the two sides can't reach a long-term deal. Either way, he figures to be back with the 49ers next season as a pass-rushing outside linebacker. ( RotoWire - Thu. Feb 4, 2010) |
News: Willis is dealing with some swelling in his right knee and won't play in the Pro Bowl, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. [+]
Impact: The swelling is believed to be due to bursitis, but Willis' injury is not considered serious at this point. He first felt discomfort on Thursday. The NFL's leading tackler should be fine heading into the 2010 season. ( RotoWire - Fri. Jan 29, 2010) | |
