He was thought to have the best arm for this draft, but character issues pushed Mallett much farther down than expected — all the way to the third round to the New England Patriots. And with Tom Brady signing an extension through the 2014 season, Mallett's chances of playing for the Patriots appear very slim.

Give general manager Tom Dimitroff credit for understanding that the team badly needed a downfield, physical presence in the passing game. While he gave up a lot in order to secure Julio Jones (pictured), the talented wide receiver will give the Falcons a badly needed jolt.

The Patriots had a major need for pass rushers, but Bill Belichick (pictured) ignored the outside linebacker position. They could have selected outside linebacker Akeem Ayers, but chose to go with a cornerback instead in the second round. The Patriots were already in decent shape at cornerback, but all the good cover guys in the world won’t matter if you can’t consistently get to the quarterback.

Who is Shane Bannon (not pictured)? No team in the NFL probably had an idea who he was about four weeks ago. In fact, he didn't even have an agent until recently. But after a very athletic pro day workout, Bannon received interest from about six to seven teams. Todd Haley (pictured) and the Chiefs decided to take a shot on him in the seventh round.

As of mid-February, it was believed that he was considered to be possible top-five pick, but after teams found out that his knee surgery was more serious than first thought, Bowers' stock dropped steeply. If he can stay healthy, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could wind up getting a steal with the second-round pick.

The Texans finally got the message and selected five defensive players with their first five selections. For a change, they might actually be on their way to building a decent defense. And the new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips for Gary Kubiak (pictured) should have an impact in his first year.

Welcome to the Bizzaro World — oh, I meant the Seahawks' draft. Instead of selecting a quarterback with one of their first two selections, they went for help on their offensive line and both of those first two selections — including first-round pick James Carpenter (pictured) — were considered reaches at the point where they were selected by many draft analysts.

The Lions wound up having only five selections, but they made good use out of them. Their first three selections will fill three needs. And wide receiver Titus Young might have been the best deep threat available. Defensive tackle Nick Fairley (pictured) was a great value at No. 13 overall.

Green's drop to the seventh round was stunning considering it was thought that he was a lock to go no later than the fourth round. Green had microfracture surgery on his right knee prior to his freshman year in 2007, but never missed a game or practice in four seasons. The Denver Broncos got a potential steal with Green.

He went from being considered as a potentially good backup late during his senior season at TCU to being the future quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals. And if Carson Palmer makes good on his threat to retire, Dalton could actually begin the season under center for the Bengals.
