NFL 5 1320 NFL Week 6: What we learned 30267774 The Luck thing might get serious The+Luck+thing+might+get+serious NFL

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay isn't one for self-censorship. He says, and tweets, what comes to mind. Such was the case recently when he said he would draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck if he gets the chance. No real upside to fueling stories about Peyton Manning's NFL future, but that's Irsay. With every week the Colts remain winless, such talk will increase. Fill-in QB Curtis Painter didn't get much going at Cincinnati as Indy fell to 0-6. The Colts need a defense, but they might wind up with two superstar QBs instead.

The Pittsburgh Steelers weren't at their best against the visiting Jaguars, and the teams played, essentially, to a statistical draw. One big difference: Rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert directed Jacksonville to 4-of-15 success on third-down conversions and Ben Roethlisberger had the Steelers 7 of 15. A 32-yard pass on third-and-3 from Big Ben to Emmanuel Sanders (pictured) set up Pittsburgh's first touchdown, and a 9-yarder to Hines Ward on third-and-4 set up the second score. Up two touchdowns, the Steelers held on from there.

NFL 5 1320 NFL Week 6: What we learned 30267770 The Eagles need Vick on the field The+Eagles+need+Vick+on+the+field NFL

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick has fallen off from his 2010 excellence, but Philly dearly needs him taking snaps. We saw why one one series of plays when Vick was sidelined to recover from a hard hit. Backup Vince Young left a trail of drama behind in Tennessee and immediately transformed the Eagles into a "Dream Tream" albatross with his ill-advised quote upon arrival in Philadelphia. As bad as Young has been off the field, he wasn't any better on it against Washington. His only pass of the game thrown on the run, off balance. It was intercepted as it fluttered down yards short of the intended receiver. Given a few more chances, Young surely would have matched Redskins QB Rex Grossman's four picks.

NFL 5 1320 NFL Week 6: What we learned 30267771 Need a win? Go conservative Need+a+win%3F+Go+conservative NFL

It has been true since leather helmets. When a team's season hangs in the balance, it usually goes the conservative route. The Falcons have been among the league's top disappointments in the early weeks, and they surely couldn't afford a home loss against the much-improved Carolina Panthers. So they gave the ball to bruising running back Michael Turner a season-high 27 times. He delivered 139 yards and two touchdown as Atlanta climbed back to .500. Bronko Nagurski and Marion Motley would have approved.

NFL 5 1320 NFL Week 6: What we learned 30267773 A.J. Hawk wants another ring A.J.+Hawk+wants+another+ring NFL

The Packers' linebacker (shown sacking Sam Bradford) must be ready for another ring. He just couldn't wait to get sized for a new one. He held up a digit, the one next to his ring finger, while gesturing to his own sideline Sunday. Remember, his team is 6-0 and was never challenged by the Rams on Sunday. There really wasn't anything to get worked up over, so the gesture seemed inexplicable. After the game, Hawk apologized and said that it was part of a running joke with his teammates. Apparently, things have gotten so easy for the Packers that they've resorted to entertaining themselves during games.

The feel-good stories of the NFC weren't feeling so good about each other after their coaches battled following San Francisco's 25-19 victory at Detroit. The teams are right behind Green Bay as the class of the conference because they play hard for 60 minutes. Emotions are high when two such teams meet, and room for error is minimal. The Lions' big mistake came early in the first quarter. After Kyle Vanden Bosch stripped 49ers quarterback Alex Smith of the ball, Detroit had the ball on the 2-yard line with the chance to take a seven-point lead and deflate the Niners in front of a raucous home crowd. Titus Young — a receiver! — then committed a false start to move his team back five yards. The Lions settled for a field goal, and San Francisco was given time to adjust to the loud conditions in the dome. If Young (pictured) doesn't twitch, Lions coach Jim Schwartz isn't so touchy later.

Going into Sunday, the Giants ranked No. 28 in the NFL in rushing with 83.8 yards per game. They took little comfort in the fact they were three spots ahead of their stadium co-tenant, the Jets. They were up to the task against the Buffalo Bills, however, as Ahmad Bradshaw delivered the Giants' first 100-yard game of the year. More important, he got the tough yards. He scored three times from one yard out as the Giants came away with a hard-earned, 27-24 victory that left the Giants in first place in the NFC East.

Trailing 14-13 midway through the third quarter and needing to keep the game close with its offense struggling, Baltimore held Houston scoreless the rest of the way, ended the game on a 16-0 run and held Houston running back Arian Foster to only 49 yards on 15 carries. Ray Lewis (pictured) and his defense did fail to force a turnover for the first time in 10 games, but at 4-1, the Ravens stand alone atop the AFC North.

Because Oakland quarterback Jason Campbell (No. 8) left Sunday's game against Cleveland with a broken collarbone. The Raiders won in his absence, but thanks primarily to a TD on a fake field goal and another on a kickoff return. Oakland is 4-2, a half-game behind the idle Chargers, but replacement QB Kyle Boller was a modest 8 of 14 for 100 yards and no scores or no interceptions, and the Browns did outscore the Raiders 10-0 in the fourth quarter.

No doubt Saints coach and famed workaholic Sean Payton (pictured wearing headset) will take some time to get over Sunday's divisional beating at Tampa Bay, but he may take even longer to recover from the torn knee ligament and broken bone he suffered after being tangled up in a tackle on the sideline. Scheduled for surgery on Monday, Payton watched the game from the training room and gave the play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael.

Tony Romo (pictured) and the Dallas Cowboys played perhaps their best game of the season, taking the host New England Patriots down to the wire. But when Tom Brady hit Aaron Hernandez from 8 yards out with 22 seconds left to win the game 20-16, the only thing that mattered for the Cowboys was their 2-3 record, which puts them two wins behind the Giants in the NFC East. One piece of good news for Jerry's boys? They play St. Louis next weekend.

Sure, the Bears rolled the Vikings 39-10 on Sunday night. And sure Devin Hester (pictured) looked primed for a monster night with a 48-yard TD catch and 98-yard kickoff return for a score. But one chest injury later, and now Chicago will wake up Monday wondering how long its most dynamic — and arguably most important — player will be out. At 3-3, the Bears have plenty of work to do with the 6-0 Packers and 5-1 Lions in front of them in the NFC North.
