Jim McMahon owned Super Bowl XX. Period. Already the strangest brew on a team overflowing with colorful characters (the first QB known for head-butting his O-linemen), McMahon was the focal figure in New Orleans even before arrival having just been fined by for wearing sponsored headbands (of course, McMahon responded by wearing a headband spelling "Rozelle" after the commissioner). In just a week's time in the Bayou, McMahon became embroiled in the only acupuncture controversy in NFL history, allegedly mooned a local news helicopter from the Bears practice field and became Public Enemy No. 1 when local radio stations incorrectly said that McMahon called the women of New Orleans "sluts." It was non-stop McMahon on Bourbon Street, the most memorable Super Bowl week from one player.

If the Packers backup tight end played in today's era -- with the modern media -- he never would have had a chance to become a sudden star on the first-ever Super Sunday. According to football lore, McGee had quite a night before Super Bowl I -- he allegedly attended a brothel, an opium den and ended up in jail briefly. Meanwhile on gameday, Green Bay's starting tight end got hurt, leaving the hard-partying McGee to catch seven passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns in a surprise Super Bowl MVP performance.

The Oakland Raiders of the late 1970s and early 1980s were renowned for their fill of characters, but possibly the biggest (both literally and figuratively) was their 6-foot-8 defensive end known as "The Tooz." Pictured flexing his muscle after arriving at the team hotel the Monday before Super Bowl week, Matuszak was quoted that he would make sure no players broke curfew, saying "I've had enough parties for 20 people's lifetimes. I've grown up. I'll keep our young fellows out of trouble. If any players want to stray, they gotta go through Ol' Tooz.'' The next night, he was out partying past 3 a.m. and was fined $1,000.

The former Kansas City Chiefs head coach Hank Stram is one of the reasons many hardcore NFL fans are in love with NFL Films. Stram -- who used to wear a scuba suit under his clothes to make himself look even trimmer -- was the first pro head coach to agree to wear a microphone during a game, and the coach put on an all-time great performance in sideline commentary during Super Bowl IV against the Vikings -- including "Let's matriculate the ball down the field, boys", "How could all six of you miss a play like that?", "65 Toss Power Trap" (over and over and over) and while ripping the opposing Vikings: "You can't do that in OUR league!"

Whether he had the mohawk or the afro hairdo (pictured during his Jets days), RB John Riggins was no ordinary customer. During his days with the Washington Redskins, he was known around town for living out of his van by the Potomac River and partaking in local adult beverage establishments during the day or night. The fact that he also had one of the most clutch runs in Super Bowl history, the go-ahead touchdown run against Miami in Super Bowl XVII, means nobody would ever tell him he was crazy.

"The Fridge" was a folk hero almost immediately in his rookie year with the Bears in 1985. Notorious for his incredible girth, waist size and gap-toothed grin, Perry (ahem) ate up the attention that was heaped upon him when he became a 350+-pound ball-carrier on some of Chicago's short-yardage plays -- including scoring a touchdown in Super Bowl XX. Perry may still have the largest Super Bowl ring order on record, a size 25.

The 1983 Los Angeles Raiders were full of personalities, but none moreso than animated defensive end Lyle Alzado (pictured left, with teammate and current FOX NFL Sunday analyst Howie Long). Knowing this, of course the media tried to hook Alzado into talking trash before Super Bowl XVIII against the Redskins. Alzado took the bait, claiming "I'm gonna take off Joe Theismann's head." Alzado and the Raiders left Washington's QB's head intact, but trounced the Redskins, 38-9.
