The last thing the Jets and Mark Sanchez need right now is a poor offensive outing on Monday Night Football. Even though the Jets have won three of their last four, the offense is actually scoring fewer points now than they have all season at just 17.5 per game. The team as a whole is even worse in the turnover margin at minus-4 instead of the minus-2 they were at in the first 10 weeks. Still, they are just one game out of the final AFC wild-card spot with games against the Titans, Chargers and Bills that have a combined record of 14-25. It would be of great benefit for the Jets to start the schedule with a solid offensive showing on the big stage of Monday night. For what it’s worth, in his last game against the Titans, Sanchez threw for two touchdowns and rushed for one more. Pick: Jets

Aldon Smith’s 33.5 career sacks are the most ever by a player in his first two NFL seasons. it’s hard to take any credit away from him, but he benefits greatly from the presence of his Mizzou brethren, Justin Smith. Justin has just three sacks on the season, but his 64 total tackles are already 12 more than his total last year and just 17 fewer than his career-high in 2007, his second-to-last season in Cincinnati. While Aldon Smith wreaks havoc along the edges, the 49ers will move Justin Smith all over the defensive front and the pressure he provides collapses the middle and forces opposing quarterbacks to break the pocket and run right into Aldon’s awaiting arms. The Patriots are at their best when they get the running game rolling. Stevan Ridley’s 10 touchdowns are tied for second in the NFL and he has accounted for at least one rushing score in six consecutive games. Justin Smith plays the run just as well as the pass and will not only consume double-teams, but get off blocks and make stops that other defensive lineman in the NFL could only dream about. But I don’t think that will be enough. Pick: Patriots

For all the criticism Tony Romo has encountered as the Cowboys’ starting quarterback, his stats are actually very similar to Dallas legend and Hall of Famer Troy Aikman. Sure, the NFL is obviously more of a pass-happy league right now, but Romo also doesn’t have the help of guys like Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin. Romo has led the resurgent Cowboys to four wins in the past five games and is closing in on yet another 4,000-yard season. Romo will look to take advantage of an injury-riddled unit that is still ranked No. 1 in the NFL in total defense as well as passing defense. The Steelers have surrendered just 169.2 yards though the air per game, but have given up five touchdown passes in the last three games. If Romo can minimize mistakes and take what the defense gives him, he has the firepower to keep Dallas in the thick of the wild-card race. Pick: Cowboys

I’ve been impressed with Brady Quinn as a leader throughout all the tragedy in Kansas City and he’s been more than impressive at the podium speaking with the media, but that doesn’t make him a great quarterback. I’m a little surprised that at this point in the season, the Chiefs haven’t allowed Ricky Stanzi an opportunity to see what type of player he can morph into on game day. Quinn and Matt Cassel have been somewhat comparable throughout and neither increases the Chiefs’ chances of winning. If there is one positive, it’s that Quinn has four wins in his career as a starting quarterback and three of them happen to have come in the month of December. Pick: Raiders

The Lions have been eliminated from the playoffs and have ensured their 11th losing record in the last 12 seasons. What’s even more depressing is that they have held at least a 10-point lead in their last three games and lost them all. That is a tough situation for a fan base that was very optimistic entering the season and hoping for back-to-back playoff appearances. The Cardinals entered the year with tempered expectations but they were heightened after starting 4-0, including a road win over the New England Patriots. They have lost every game since. You hate to say it, but these two coaches may be competing for their futures in this league. Pick: Lions

Remember when the local media depicted Cam Newton wearing a shirt featuring Hello Kitty instead of Superman? Well, he has been a man on a mission since and in last week’s win over the Falcons he became the first NFL quarterback to have more than 250 yards passing, a passing touchdown, more than 100 yards rushing and a rushing touchdown in a single game. Combine that Superman-like effort with his previous games and you have a quarterback who is averaging 270 yards passing while completing better than 60 percent of his throws. He also has eight TD passes and no interceptions. That doesn’t sound like Hello Kitty to me. Pick: Panthers

The Seahawks have won four of their last five and currently hold the No. 5 seed in the NFC playoff race, but it’s no secret they have struggled on the road this season. They are just 2-5 away from home and their signature road victory came over the slumping Bears in Week 13. Interestingly enough, almost all of QB Russell Wilson’s statistics heading into this contest in Toronto are better on the road. His completion percentage is three points higher and he throws for 20 more yards on average, but he turns the ball over eight times more frequently. Turnovers can beat you on the road. Pick: Seahawks.

Even with big-name play-makers on the outside like Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks, it has been tight end Martellus Bennett who has been the scoring threat in the past two games. While the Falcons will use Asante Samuel and Dunta Robinson to match up on the outside, they will rely on their talented pair of safeties to shut down the middle of the field. Atlanta is the only team in the NFL with two safeties who each have four or more interceptions on the season, with Thomas DeCoud leading the way with five. Eli Manning has been prone to mistakes with two multiple-interception games in his last four outings, and Atlanta will be disguising coverages with its amoeba defensive package, to avoid showing its hand during pre-snap reads. This will allow for more ball-hawking by DeCoud and could be the game-changer for the Falcons. Pick: Falcons

These two teams met in Week 7 and it came down to the last seconds as a Mike Williams reception was nullified because he had stepped out of bounds and was the first to touch the ball on what would have been the game-tying touchdown. Playing close games isn’t uncommon in this series as the teams have split every season since 2008. Each team enters Week 15 with a three-game losing streak and all but eliminated from the playoffs. Pick: Saints

Christian Ponder hasn’t been stellar at home, though he is 6-1 in the dome. But he’s really struggled on the road this season, with a record of 1-5. Without Percy Harvin on the outside, the Vikings will need to manufacture some big plays in the passing game with their scheme or even some trick plays to get the ball down the field. Ponder has 14 touchdown passes, but none have been longer than 20 yards. The Vikings will still run against eight- and nine-man boxes, but that should be futile if they can’t get any big plays from Ponder. Pick: Rams

Remember when Mike Shanahan said he was just going to evaluate players for the future, almost as if he were waiving the white flag on the current season? Well, that was four straight wins ago, and now the Redskins are in the thick of the NFC wildcard race and just one game behind the division-leading Giants. RG3 (knee sprain) is officially questionable for this game, though FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer reported Saturday night that fellow rookie Kirk Cousins, not RG3, will start. That could have a huge impact in not only the passing game, but maybe even more so in the play-action running game. Without the read-option, I’m not sure Alfred Morris is the type of back who can shoulder the load in a traditional scheme. I like the Redskins with a healthy RG3, but have a lot less conviction with Cousins. Pick: Redskins

Turnovers will be the key as the Dolphins are last in the league in takeaways over the course of the last six games. They have just one takeaway since Week 9 — in the previous eight games they had accounted for 11, which may explain why they started the season 4-3 and are now losers in five of their last six. Similarly, the Dolphins are 4-2 when Ryan Tannehill doesn’t have a turnover and a dismal 1-6 when he does have a giveaway. If the Dolphins are even or plus-1 in the turnover margin, they will easily win this game. Pick: Dolphins

Much of the criticism directed at former offensive coordinator Cam Cameron was his lack of creativity for what could be an explosive offense centered around dynamic running back Ray Rice. When looking at Rice’s potential impact in this game, it’s not just about how many carries he gets, but it’s the threat of what he can do in the quick pass or screen game. Denver is obviously going to try and apply pressure off the edge with Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil, so new offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell can help his offensive line by keeping them running sideline to sideline. He will do so with quick-hitting plays on the outside so that both ends will have to burn energy chasing plays rather than rushing up field. When he does run, look for Rice to run right at the speed rushers on either side to force them to stay true to their defensive assignments. If Dumervil and Miller have to hold the point of attack in the running game they won’t get the jump on their speed rush they consistently get in obvious passing situations. Pick: Broncos

The Texans have won nine of their last 11 games within the division and a lot of that has to due with the success of Arian Foster. Foster has done extraordinarily well against the Colts, with an average of 163.7 rushing yards in three career games. Indianapolis has been surprisingly good this year but has needed some miraculous fourth-quarter comebacks to earn its 9-4 record. If the Texans can jump out to an early lead, look for them to play ball-control offense and take the ball out of Andrew Luck’s hands for as much as the second half as they possibly can. To do that, they will use a steady dose of Foster and add a fair amount of touches for Ben Tate. Foster needs just 52 yards to reach 1,200 on the ground for the third consecutive season. At first glance, that shouldn’t be a tall order against a defense that is giving up more than 120 rushing yards per game. But this is a defense that is steadily improving and has held opposing running backs under the century mark for two consecutive weeks. Pick: Texans

Jay Cutler got knocked out of last week’s game in the fourth quarter with a neck injury, but all indications are that he’ll be ready come Sunday. Since joining the Bears, Cutler is just 1-6 against the Packers but he is 9-2 at home in his last 11 starts. Something is going to have to give and it may depend on how many of the Packers’ starting defenders are able to return to the lineup. The Packers have been without Clay Matthews for four weeks and Charles Woodson since Week 7. Despite all the time missed, Matthews still leads the team with nine sacks and Woodson has the second-most career interceptions for all active players with 55, which only trails Ed Reed. If the Packers get these two players back, it may make for a tough day for Jay Cutler … one he can’t afford to have. The Bears are 8-2 this season when Cutler throws for more than 150 yards, but are 0-2 when he doesn’t. Pick: Packers
